Is this article correct ? Because it would implies an OPPOSITE meaning of the word downscaling: in climate change scenario it would means to bring some climate forecast from a low resolution down to a higher resolution, in computer sciences to bring down the resolution from a high resolution to a lower one... Yeah your correct the wikipage is incorrect. I'm going to fix it now. --LasPo rocks (talk) 21:08, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah the two meanings are opposite. I think the page for computer image downscaling is Spatial anti-aliasing, so I have added a WP:HATNOTE. I think a hatnote is the correct thing to do, but someone please fix it if I have linked to the wrong article. Adpete (talk) 23:11, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

image scaling is the link, not spatial anti aliasing which has nothing to do with the concept of scaling.
This page still has massive issues that haven't been addressed. It should really be removed. 2600:6C64:4A3F:4C2C:C873:9301:65A2:DCD5 (talk) 01:17, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

only in climate science?[edit]

The lead sentence currently says, "Downscaling is any procedure to infer high-resolution information from low-resolution variables." After looking at some of the references (and the titles of every single reference), and some articles like Image scaling, I am coming to the conclusion that: the lead sentence is too broad; that this definition only applies in climate science; and that in computer graphics the opposite word is used for the same idea ("Upscaling"), though in computer graphics the techniques are very different. So, I am going to add something like "In the field of climate science" to the lead sentence, to narrow the scope of the article. Adpete (talk) 04:56, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Needs updates to help with confusing terms across fields of science[edit]

This article is the primary reason i think a lot of people are now confusing image scaling with whatever this article is in reference to. Ive clearly seen it. Its one of the primary reasons why people think DLSS is a downscalar. Work really needs to be done to differentiate the two in a much better fashion that whats done. 2600:6C64:4A3F:4C2C:C873:9301:65A2:DCD5 (talk) 01:13, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The generic claim is that DS is "is any procedure to infer high-resolution information from low-resolution variables". People think this means getting a higher resolution image from a lower resolution image which is actually called upscaling. The problem here is that this article is far too generic and it applies to a science that uses different definition. Its a very large source of confusion. 2600:6C64:4A3F:4C2C:C873:9301:65A2:DCD5 (talk) 01:16, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Im going to suggest that this page really be removed as its clearly not helping anything. 2600:6C64:4A3F:4C2C:C873:9301:65A2:DCD5 (talk) 01:18, 12 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ive edited the wiki to try and explain to people that this is not image scaling. What people do is type "downscaling" into google and this is the first entry they see. Then they read and believe the first sentence as if its gospel. I hope the last sentence helps, but really we need an expert to review this and chime in as what downscaling is here is generally being explained too generically and should be put in a category of mathematics (like statistics) rather than saying "any procedure". Its far too easy to read that wrong if one doesn't know how to use an encyclopedia. Which is far too many people these days. Feel free to add to it or even add a link to a citation. Ill try to add done at some point if i can find a good authoritative source. 2600:6C64:4A3F:4C2C:98F0:DB24:5BF1:20DB (talk) 19:30, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
