Merge Dry lightning and Dry thunderstorm[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was to merger into Dry thunderstorm. Pierre cb (talk) 19:05, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi:

These two articles seems about the same thing: a thunderstorm in a dry environment giving very litlle rain or the rain shaft is far from the observer. In either case, the lightning is causing problems because it can ignite fire that the rain cannot extinguish. I would therfore propose to merge them into Dry thunderstorm but the merge could be the other way around. Pierre cb (talk) 04:52, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Comments[edit]

  • Agree Thanks for the invitation, Pierre, even though my contribution to the article(s) may have been only tangential. From a layman's POV this merger would make sense. Both articles sport a "lack of references" or "lack of inline citation"' tags and I would like to see that issue addressed. I would, of course, defer to the experts. • Agree This is a no-brainer: it's exactly the same thing. Just needs someone to do the work. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 08:07, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • no Disagree I was not a major contributor to this article, but I would leave the articles separate. We have different articles for lightning and thunderstorms right? Fotaun (talk) 17:03, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree Dry lightning should redirect to dry thunderstorms - dry lightning is nothing special, it even happens in wet thunderstorms. Famartin (talk) 20:23, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree I would favor the merger into the article for Dry Lightning. The reason for this is that the term "dry lightning" is the most commonly used for the phenomenon in the areas where it occurs, and is therefore the most likely title that someone would be searching for. Someone who added an edit to the article also pointed out that lightning can occasionally occur without a thunderstorm at all. Overall, both articles are in desperate need of cleanup. Addendum: Why is there a separate article for Dry Thunderstorm vis a vis the main article on Thunderstorms? It's only a type of thunderstorm. Perhaps there ought to be a further merger.Tmangray (talk) 07:49, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Good question. But I think to proceed one merger at a time. Pierre cb (talk) 08:10, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Agree Disagree with moving it into dry lightning. Dry thunderstorm should be the article we keep. Dry thunderstorms are a phenomenon (a thunderstorm which produces little rain). Dry lightning is simply lightning accompanied by no rain, which can happen around the periphery of normal thunderstorms. 198.206.34.144 (talk) 03:50, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Agree I'll jump in here; I agree with merging dry lightening into dry thunderstorm, as a dry thunderstorm is the main cause of dry lightening. As far as the most common name between the two, that can be taken care of in the lead section. United States Man (talk) 17:11, 24 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
