Merger proposal[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was Don't merge. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 11:25, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I propose merging Dublin South-East (Dáil constituency) into Dublin Bay South. The current constituency is a clear continuation of the older DSE. The Constituency Commission itself used the term rename, as opposed to "new constituency" in the case of Dublin Bay South see end of p. 27. The transfer of a small amount of territory from Dublin South-Central at the same time was no more or less than we usually see between revisions, and was not the reason for the change in name. The voting patterns of this page discusses Dublin South-East in terms of the 1983 referendum and the profile of TDs. Having the results on the same page allows reader to easily compare the 2011 and 2016 results, which had a similar set of candidates, and indeed, voting patterns throughout the entire period from 1948 to the present. This proposal would only affect the target of links; the visible text on e.g. Garret FitzGerald or lists of constituencies would not change. Kerry North (Dáil constituency) gives an example of how a article title here can accommodate two formal constituency names. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 10:56, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Iveagh Gardens this is a really bad idea. The only sane way to maintain constituency articles is to have a separate article for each name. That's because constituencies move and morph over time, esp in Dublin, and the only way to distinguish them is by name.
I am horrified to see that it has been implemented without any input from anyone else. AFAICS, you didn't even notify WikiProject Ireland. Please revert, and also revert Kerry North (Dáil constituency). BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:46, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your input. Responding here immediately via the mobile app to stay engaged, I can discuss it more fully later. This has been part of a series of similar mergers I implemented, and while I didn't notify WT:IE in the case of each one, I have kept the notice board informed in the case of some of these. I can open a general discussion on this. If the consensus is maintain separate pages for each name (a result I would disagree with), I can commit to reverting the changes as much as possible myself. I will lay out my reasoning there. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 14:00, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Iveagh Gardens the sooner this is reverted, the easier it is to restore the status quo ante. So I have revered DSE, and will now proceed to unmerge Kerry North. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:56, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not trying to stall at all, and in this case, if I've made a mistake, I am willing to do the work myself (just not able right now at this very moment). I thought in the case of Kerry North by notifying WT:IE I had followed procedures and best practices, but I am happy to get a wider consensus view on it.
