The paragraph: "EMG has over the years garnered a reputation as one of the best manufacturers of guitar pickups and are now used as standard on the more expensive models of guitar manufacturers such as ESP Guitars." is definitely not neutral and some statements in the article looks like "self-advertising. I think that a "Cleanup" is needed to "neutralize" the article.

NPOV fix[edit]

I agree there was some EMG boosterism going on. I edited that paragraph to indicate

a) not all high end guitars from ESP use EMGs (for example, none of the guitars in their Edwards line do)

b) Other manufacturers such as jackson sometimes equip guitars with EMGs

c) not all of the EMG line is held in uniformly high regard

d) an explanation of why EMGs are desirable for certain styles

Someone more familiar with bass pickups should probably provide analogous information on that topic

What about singing?[edit]

How come there's no mention of the EMG's uncanny ability to produce vocals through the pickups?

Because it has nothing to do with the Pickups. You can do this with all high output pickups. A SH-13 probably will even work better for that. The Pickup self doesn't do anything then it does when playing, its just that u use the strings as a membrane. But you can't get real voice out of it.. Sorry it doesn't work. Every famous guitar Player doing that claimed that he had other technical tuning to do it, probably a small Mic or pickupcovers covered with high Iron containing metal to be used as a membrane --78.51.115.201 01:36, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's called "microphonics" and is an undesirable quality in a pickup. It's caused by the coil windings, and/or parts of the pickup being able to vibrate. EMG's are wax potted and then sealed in epoxy, so you cannot sing into them. DavidRavenMoon (talk) 06:44, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the various types of pickups, as there are only so many variations that are possible. Also, the list of notable users is listed at the start of the article, and there is no reason why it needs to be repeated just to show off specific custom variations as it's too far down the WP:ADVERT line.TorstenGuise (talk) 15:25, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

disadvantages: not well though out[edit]

just to say where it says that it is better to buy emgs from a factory guitar as it is cheaper. Not true, as most guitars with Emg active pickups are from the high price range, all the more affordable guitars have passive Hz pickups. So if someone doesn't want to spend loads on a guitar, and still have active pickups, this is the cheapest way (I did this, put emg 81 in an ibanezrg 370). Also, if you buy a guitar with emgs from the factory, you will be paying for 2 pickups, whereas if you choose to install them yourself, you may only want to pay for 1. Also, saying that a "luthier" installs them is ridiculous: most shops that sell them will install them, and I bet most of the people who install them have never made a guitar before. Also, some shops will install them for free. And they're not that expensive: music store in germany now sells them for €86, not bad, you would pay around this for some passive pickups. Probably a similar person who wrote a lot of the old Seymour Duncan page till I took an axe to it. That read as if it was a brochure for them, as this one did. These articles are dangerously evangelical about the subject and are just seen as free advertising for the company. I think that's an awful line that should be taken out, starved for three weeks, brought back inside, hung, drawn and quartered, shot, and fed to hedgehogs with a side salad of irony. Subjective and irrelevant information[edit]

Is it just me, or is this more an article about the subjective debate over "active" and regular pickups? Shouldn't the scope be limited to A: the company history, and B: a brief description of the products and technology they produce? The discussion of active vs. passive should be moved to/merged with the appropriate section of Guitar pickup.
