First, I'm not sure we should have an article about someone about whom we know nothing [1] - note that spells the name as in the article. His name is spelled Edgar sometimes [2] (which adds that his name disappears after 1008) and Eadgar [3] and the first link, other times. But not "the elder". I'm not sure what to do about this. I am inclined to agree. Certainly, he is not an important member of the House of Wessex having done nothing of note other than appearing as one of the sons of Æthelræd II. Nothing else is known about his life. Also the title "Atheling" can be applied to any prince of an Anglo-Saxon house and in this case just confuses him with the well known Edgar the Atheling (1051-1126). Regarding the spelling, we need a rule on this. Because Eadgar is the old way of spelling "Edgar" just as Ælfred is Alfred and Æthelræd is Ethelred. Is there an established rule with this? Hi James. All I can find is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) but the main thing is that other articles on Anglo-Saxon kings use Æ - see for instance List of monarchs of East Anglia which uses Æm 'Eadmund', etc. So I think we are ok, although it's a bit messy. And as you say, 'Atheling' doesn't add anything except a possible confusion. Can I say that I really did spent quite a bit of time on this to get it right. We can easily turn this into a redirect to Æthelræd II - hm, glad you used that form, it's red-linked, so it should be a redirect to Æthelred the Unready (another ash, which helps answer your question) What do you want to do?
