Inconsistencies[edit]

  • Assumptions made about the origins of the mules.
  • No plans of the original mill yet
  • No details of the 1916 architects.
  • There is a discussion on One Lad from Barlick about the naming of the engines- RO source has the first single triple engine being named as two engines!?

That's an interesting site (although I didn't spot the reference to the engine names). It also mentions that the flywheel has fewer ropes that it needs for the engine power (limited by building size) and that in the later years only one engine ran and it was noted as supplying 1500hp.
How did they convert the engine? Admittedly they both had 4 cylinders, but the triple-expansion, by definition, would have had three sizes of cylinder (presumably the fourth was a second LP cylinder) and a different crankshaft, etc. The more I try to picture it, the less I can see how it was a 'conversion'.

I have sent an email to the guys at Ellenroad so they can correct the Wikipedia link on their website- and hopefully enter into dialogue with us. As this is such an important engine, there does seem to be little real hard core information about it- I am hoping they have a lot more in their archives.
As to the mill itself, we have details of the fire but I don't have any illustrations of the first mill. For the second mill I dont have the name of the architect, the type of ring frames used or much about the building. To be honest, I think it was just one of many until its engine survived and the others didn't; so there was no reason for anyone to hold onto the documentation. I am still wrestling with it so if I am a bit off focus at the moment don't be surprised. --ClemRutter (talk) 17:39, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
