Terms of reference[edit]

I'd be interested to read here about the ECB's terms of reference and delegated authority. If I remember correctly, the TCCB was a quango; but the ECB is a limited company. Who are its shareholders? Presumably the MCC, the counties and the Recreational Assembly but I'm just guessing.

The ECB appears to act as if maximising revenue was its only goal. This has hampered its freedom to act when confronted with a political crisis, like whether to play in Zimbabwe or not. On that occasion, the ICC fine for not playing was the ECB's only consideration and officials said this was because their terms of reference didn't allow them any other discretion. It would be interesting to read how this came about.

I don't know the answers to any of these questions - that's why I came to this Wikipedia article. I hope somebody with more knowledge than me will update the article.

Committee descriptions out of date?[edit]

I believe Giles Clarke is one of the 15 members of the Management Board of the ECB - at least, I saw him being interviewed on BBC World news as one of its representatives. I know that, having once worked for Majestic Wines, that he set up this company and was wondering how he ended up on the ECB? Can anyone enlighten me?Ivankinsman 16:32, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The 'W'[edit]

The first sentence of this article: "The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) (Welsh: Bwrdd Criced Cymru a Lloegr) is the governing body of cricket in England and Wales." is unsourced. Who is it that recognises the ECB as the governing body of cricket in England and Wales? The reason I ask is that while creating the article Governing bodies of sports in Wales I found that the ECB is not recognised by the Sports Council for Wales as one of the "National Governing Bodies of Sports in Wales that are recognised by the Sports Council for Wales" - see here. Presumably it isn't listed because Wales does not compete independently of England in cricket? And I would guess that the "W" was omitted to avoid confusion, as there is no "Wales cricket team". Just my two cents. --LlwynogCymru (talk) 14:33, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A reference has been added to the first sentence of this article. I assume that this paragraph: "The ECB and its chairman Giles Clarke have received support from at least 11 of the 18 counties and earlier on Thursday Glamorgan chairman Paul Russell defended the checks carried out by domestic cricket's governing body." is the reason why. Unfortunately, it does not substantiate the statement: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) (Welsh: Bwrdd Criced Cymru a Lloegr) is the governing body of cricket in England and Wales.". This page on the Sports Council website has the "Relationship to National Bodies" sections containing 'members of the ECB' or words to that affect which suggests to me that both the Welsh Cricket Association and Cricket Board of Wales are members of the England and Wales Cricket Board like a Yorkshire Cricket Board would be, therefore they do all the grassroots work but the overriding decisions are made by the ECB. The first link is dead. Could you take a look at it please? The second link was to the ECB's own website. This document from Sport Wales shows the ECB is only recognised as the governing body of cricket in England. The only cricket governing body recognised by Sport Wales is the Cricket Board of Wales. The 'citation needed' tag has been removed from the article. However, the statement claiming that the ECB "is the governing body of cricket in England and Wales" is not cited. This document from Sport Wales shows the ECB is only recognised as the governing body of cricket in England. The only cricket governing body recognised by Sport Wales is the Cricket Board of Wales. No problem. It should probably stay until a better reference is found. It almost says that the ECB is a governing body. Though, as you say, it is rather vague - referring to "domestic cricket's governing body". Whatever you think best. Daicaregos (talk) 22:06, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we already have the answer to this situation. Perhaps the opening sentence could be changed to "The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) (Welsh: Bwrdd Criced Cymru a Lloegr) considers itself to be the governing body of cricket in England and Wales" referenced to the ECB website which states "The England and Wales Cricket Board is the governing body for all cricket in England and Wales". Given that Sport Wales officially recognise Cricket Wales, a subsidiary organisation of the ECB, as the official governing body of cricket in Wales, they are by de facto also recognising its parent organisation as having authority. Py0alb (talk) 13:41, 15 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
