Comment[edit]

Here is some room for improvement for the article :

1)There should be a state by state listing for the article. In particular, there should be a brief overview for each one of the states so as to take into account some of the following statistics so that there is an adequate presentation of the climate/environmental statistics and other information that could be used in order to determine the status of each geographical area. Useful statistics would have to cover the following areas hame apni dharti mata ko bachana h toh sab vasio se nivadn h ki dharti go ganda na karen -Water Supplies :

-- Annual Rainfall and rainfall variation during the course of the year.

--Water Table levels and those sources of water that enable water tables to be re-charged

--Rivers and springs that lie within the state and provide useful water supplies

--The likely utility of de-centralised water collection methods for augmenting traditional water supplies (for example – is it the case that collect roof-top water can enable more people to drink clean water? Could such water be used to replenish water tables or could it be used within agriculture?).

--Whether or not there are requirements to decrease lead/heavy metal contamination to certain water sources in order to render such water sources useful to agriculture or fit for human consumption? What technologies/filtering mechanisms would be required for such water filtration?

-Agricultural Land Quality :

--What is the nature of the soil being examined (is it clay/sandy, etc...). What minerals/nutrients are there present in the soil? What crops are such soils suitable for growing? Is such soil immune to the increased soil erosion effects that are a by-product of drought and water scarcity?

--Land area (this is obvious as a statistic and can probably be pulled from pre-existing wikipedia sites).

Clearly there are many more areas that could be mentioned in articles covering India or China, but the above listing provides what would be a good structure for describing the current agricultural state of affairs within those countries via the use of a general taxonomy, etc...

Diesel engines[edit]

In the section on air pollution: "Hundreds of millions of diesel engines ?? Perhaps "hundreds of thousands of diesel engines" or even "Millions of diesel engines." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.167.149.94 (talk) 16:11, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Water salinity[edit]

The good faith addition to this sub-topic is welcome. However, it must be rewritten because when I read through the citations for the following addition, I am unable to verify the claims and theories. In current format, it is inconsistent with wiki policies on WP:SYNTHESIS and WP:NOR. The removed sub-section is:

Most of the time, the Salinity or total dissolved salts in river water of Krishna[34], upper Godavari[35], Cauvery, Sutlej, etc is close to 500 ppm which is desirable drinking water limit. Over use of water resources mainly in agriculture by ground water and surface water irrigations are enhancing the salinity of remaining water flowing in the rivers. When more water escapes to atmosphere by Evapotranspiration from irrigated vegetation, the inorganic salts accumulate in the remaining water. Anthropogenic activities are also contributing to water salinity in the rivers. Particularly uncontrolled consumption of sodium chloride or natural salt, Sodium hydroxide or caustic soda, sodium hypochlorite or house hold bleaching powder, etc which contributes sodium salts to the river water ultimately. Excessive sodium content contribute to Sodium adsorption ratio which makes water inferior in irrigation use. Inorganic pollution in the river water is going to be major issue in water resources development[36] rather the organic pollutants which can be eliminated by the affordable water treatment technologies.

Specific problems with this sub-section are: Venot, citation [34], does not claim or mention anywhere that salinity or TDS for Krishna river is close to 500 ppm. Similarly, Godavari / Cauvery / Sutlej claims of 500 ppm are unsupported by [34], [35] and [36]. The citations do not support the claims of various sodium compounds claimed in the paragraph. Without proper citations, it is assumed to be original research with synthesis. The wiki contributor is requested to revisit the citations from reputable sources with good support for ideas summarized. I believe a sub-section summarizing on salinity environmental issue in Indian water bodies/dry-flood cycle/rivers could be useful addition, if done within wiki's NOR, no synthesis, verifiable and reputable sources guidelines.ApostleVonColorado (talk) 15:35, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Though the title is named "Environmental issues in India", this article is like a general essay without indicating the various pollutant levels in ambient air quality, river water quality, ground water quality, loss of soil fertility due to inferior water use, various major sources of pollutants, ecological status, etc spatially and seasonally. Contributors shall be encouraged to fill the gaps in their contributions and not be discouraged by deleting the contributed content on slightest pretext as long as the content is not absurd or vandalism. From the content of the article, it reminds that Indian environmental departments proponent is managing the article's content to preempt the actual reflection of field data through Wikipedia. Environment is multifaceted subject to be understood by an individual in totality though one may be expert in his field but fails to understand the fundamentals of other aspects/facets/fields. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.123.206.236 (talk) 16:15, 28 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Revisions and Edits[edit]

I added a citation needed tag to something that looked plagiarized. I couldn't find anything it was plagiarizing, but I also didn't find a source to back up what it was saying. ChaKeSeLiAl (talk) 05:43, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the citation for "http://ifs.nic.in/rt/book/page2.pdf." It was dead, so I added an archived link. ChaKeSeLiAl (talk) 05:43, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A large part of the greenhouse gas emissions was plagiarized from another wikipedia page without citations, so I deleted it all and added in a link to the page instead. ChaKeSeLiAl (talk) 05:43, 26 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I added information on the buildup of heavy metals in the soil of Ghaziabad and the risk of ingestion as well as a couple of scientific articles (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23116622 and http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/10807039.2015.1105723) to back it up.
