Romanization of ESŢFĀN AL-DWAYHĪ - request by family[edit]

Romanization of Arabic names is a tough subject. Most references to our great Patriarch would ignore the Al or El to the benefit of the contracted form without Al Atta'rif. The association for the Beatification of our Patriarch has also adopted the contracted form. Anyhow, if a wikipedia user type Estephan El Douaihy in the search box, he will find the page as a first choice. We may also create a Redirection page, but it is cumbersome. Personally, I prefer to put the variants in the text. Now that a page exists on Wikipedia, let's enrich it. Thanks to all.youcroft 16:11, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is an encyclopedia article, not a family blog.
I don't see any problem with using "al-Duwayhi" since the spelling you claim is that of the Italian transliteration which is mentioned in the lead. But creating a hybrid transliteration is nonsensical and unscientific.
There are more results for "al-Duwayhi" on Google Books.

While the picture is far from clear, it's apparent that neither the current title nor the one originally proposed are in use, while this suggestive alternative is at least in use, if not the most common. As IIO says above, the GBOOKS link he quotes shows myriad different variants on the spelling, it seems like there is genuinely no single version that predominates in English.
