Dead Lake or Fallen Leaf Lake,.[edit]

Camas Washington, zip code 98607, is located about 10 miles east of Vancouver Washington. The town in on the shores of the Columbia River. The Lake is north of the town on Ne Everett Street. The lake is hidden from the road. Using Google Earth, the Lat. and Long. are 45 Deg 36'03.22 N 122 Deg 24'42.94 W. As to the mystery of the lake, It is surrounded by trees right up to the shore line. There are just a few places the one can walk up to the lake. The main access is on the east side. There is a what looks like a boat ramp. You can walk out several feet and then the ramp drops off. You can see the bottom about 10 feet down. When you swim out a few feet further there is another drop off. You cannot see the bottom anymore. All the brave souls that I knew swam out 25 feet from shore then dove as deep as they could no one could see the bottom.

The lakes surroundings can look foreboding, especially at dusk. A camp fire can give way to chilling stories of bottomless lakes, mysterious deaths and even Big Foot. Around one such camp fire beside Dead Lake, as it was called when I was 12, A story was told about "Jimmy Rogers", famous hit "Honey Comb," who's Father had a boating accident on the lake and his body was never found.

In reality, it is just a lake that has no visible fresh water feeding the lake and no water flowing out. This has give rise to the questions, Why is the lake fresh and clean, Where does the fresh water come from? The lake is over 100 feet above the town. Camas is in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains range. There are many underground rivers. The Lake is no mystery. Yet, is sure was fun sitting by the lake around a camp fire telling ghost stories. There was a terrifying challenge to stay all night by the lake. It's been done many times. Unless you get intoxicated and try to swim in the dark and drown, the morning comes with a peaceful, tranquil beauty, unless of course its raining.
