Dubious definition[edit]

"Finger food is food meant to be eaten directly using the hands, in contrast to food eaten with a knife and fork,"

Is there a formal definition for this ? I think "finger food" refers only to SMALL items of food, hors d'ouvres, crackers with toppings, mini-cakes, stuffed olives, tiny pastries small things you can pick up from a tray at a cocktail party and eat in one bite. You eat burgers or pizza or subs with your hands but they are not "finger food".Eregli bob (talk) 14:42, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree completely. Either we use a broader title for this article, or we split it into one about foods eaten without utensils in cultures which normally use utensils, and one about cocktail party food. As for cultures which normally don't use utensils (Ethiopian, Hawaiian, southern Indian), it might even make sense to have an article grouping them. Planned Edits for Finger Food[edit]

  After reading this article, I have noticed there are a few areas to improve. The first area would be the articles organization in the 'History' and 'Types' sections. The subsections of 'History' seem to serve to list finger foods more than discuss their history or origin, so I am going to investigate the possibility of rewriting these subsections into the 'Types' section. From there, I will write a more expansive, general history of finger foods, so the 'History' section can still be used. 
  The definition of finger foods could also be simplified. I plan to find a more formal definition of finger food and incorporate that in the current definition's place. 
  Finally, I hope to better explain the role of finger foods in modern culture. While the 'Service' section covers this briefly, it can be expanded on to provide a better introduction into finger foods. 

Overall, these changes aim to expand and better organize the article. Currently, the article has a reasonable starting point with a well-defined goal, so editing it will revolve around researching and expanding the established ideas.

There are five sources I have requested to help me begin my research. These sources are:

   The primary goal of these sources is to introduce me to finger foods and some of their history. This is a very well thought-out plan. I like that you are utilizing a wide variety of sources to gain a very inclusive and well-rounded understanding of the content before you begin! Also, I agree with your comments regarding the minimalist definition of finger-foods and the lack of a comprehensible origin section, those are very important areas to have clear yet concise bits of information.
