Does anybody know why they are called floodlights?[edit]

This page seems to have too much information that doesn't pertain directly to the subject. There are too many examples of when the first floodlit sports happened. (Daddywags214 (talk) 02:44, 23 February 2010 (UTC))

I believe they are called floodlight because, in contrast to spotlights, they are designed to "flood" an area with light. That being said, this article seems much too UK centered: only a passing reference to baseball and nothing about American or Canadian football. For that matter, there is nothing about the use of floodlights for sport in other parts of the world. Wschart (talk) 17:43, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

LED[edit]

I've removed the paragraph about LED floodlights. This seems unsourced (has LED floodlighting ever been used for a sporting event?). It also included a link to a commercial website adverting a home-use "floodlight" - this is off-topic for this article. 109.157.174.197 (talk) 21:44, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
