Perhaps add some history: from de facto free protocols to proprietary ... and back to open and free protocols. —Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 12:02, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Possible Improvements[edit]

  • Add: (also known as a libre protocol).
  • A free protocol may be simply defined as a protocol which may be implemented in free software (i.e. not technical or legal restrictions such as DRM or patent-encumbrance respectively) - Kim Tucker (talk) 14:46, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
  • Note that the Free Software Foundation avoids referring to a "free standard" when "free protocol" or "free file format" would suffice, since not all are "standards".
  • Add a list of free protocols.
