Question[edit]

My father worked for Garrett AiResearch from 1965 until early 1971. He and six other men designed and constructed a milestone in public transportation. That project was the world's first Linear Induction Motor train, which he just called the "LIM train" for short. This train is pictured in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_induction_motor (second captioned picture; red and white train).

Although the train was designed to travel at speeds up to 250 MPH, the test track at the Torrance, Ca plant (which I visited many times as a child) was only about 100 yds long, so they could only get the train up to about 2 MPH. Occasionally it slid off the end of the center induction rail, so they had to manually push the train back to its hangar, which I also witnessed, amused, more than once.

In 1971 this train, and all the employees working on it, were sold to the U.S. Department of Transportation, and moved to their test track in Pueblo, CO. My father continued working on the project until the LIM train broke the tracked speed record in 1973 or 1974.

There is no mention whatsoever of this groundbreaking project on this page for Garrett AiResearch. Why is that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.189.107.186 (talk) 11:02, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Union Pacific Diesel Locomotive Turbocharging[edit]

AiResearch was involved in turbocharging Union Pacific GM-EMD GP9 locomotives equipped with the 16V-567C diesel engine. This work was done in the late 1950s. --SSW9389 12:34, 17 April 2013 (UTC) The first General Motors diesel equipped with a turbocharger was Union Pacific #281 in the Fall of 1955. AiResearch worked with Union Pacific to complete this. See the Don Strack article here http://utahrails.net/articles/up-gp9-turbo.php for details. A total of 13 Union Pacific locomotives were turbocharged with AiResearch equipment. --SSW9389 12:43, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
