New title![edit]

Whatever anyone thinks about the notability of this article, it definitely needs a new title! This one is WAY too long! – PeeJay 14:40, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My reasoning behind the long title was to clarify to which missed field goal the article is referring. Gary Anderson has had many missed field goals in his career, but the notable one was his miss in the 1999 NFC Championship. I felt that having the title be something to the effect of "Gary Anderson's missed field goal" would be too vague for that reason. Unlike other famous plays in NFL history, (i.e. Wide Right, another famous missed kick) there is no concensus nickname for this play that could be used as a title.
As for notability, I believe the numerous third party sources which recognize the kick makes this notable enough for an article. Helltopay27 (talk) 20:03, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Why not just name it 1999 NFC Championship Game, and make it an article about the game with an emphasis on the kick? That's pretty much what it is at the moment anyway, it would just need a little bit more on the game itself. Lizard (talk) 04:09, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I guess for the same reason Wide Right or The Sea of Hands have their own articles. The play has really overshadowed the game itself and garners more attention. Helltopay27 (talk) 00:41, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Can't argue with that. Curse the news reporters for not giving this play a clever name, creating difficulties for us Wikipedia editors 16 years later. Lizard (talk) 01:09, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Article has been moved to 1998 NFC Championship Game. Helltopay-27 (talk) 20:57, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Citations for quotes[edit]

Whoever left notes stating that the quotes in the Legacy and The kick sections are not included in the source given, please check again. The quote from Chad Hartman is the first line after the introduction in the Top Ten Foul Ups. Also, there is a video link to the Missing Rings segment on the kick in the external links section; please listen to the entire video, the quote from the radio broadcast is quite clearly stated. RFC for notability[edit]

I had submitted this article for featured article review last summer, and one of the main criticisms was that many people felt it lacked notability to be a Wikipedia article. Thoughts?

I personally feel that this is identified as one of the more notable events in NFL history, and I believe that the extensive third party media coverage that is cited in the article supports this fact. Helltopay27 (talk) 05:08, 21 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt WP:GNG. The references are cluttered with support for trivial game details and tangential facts, while the article is poorly sourced on the nominal topic. UW Dawgs (talk) 04:11, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I fail to see how that conclusion is made. Entire segments on television (granted, NFL television, but independent of the game nonetheless) specifically talk about the kick and it's impact. The sports journalists paragraph in the legacy section specifically talks about the influence the kick had on the franchise. Other sources note that this isn't a passing moment, but has had a significant impact on players and fans involved. If Wide Right (a similar moment) has an article without dispute, I don't see how what I've sourced is insufficient. Helltopay27 (talk) 01:23, 25 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS, but here's what I see: a mis-titled article. I understand that you'd prefer the current title since the kick itself is probably more notable than the game. But as is, this article has too much irrelevant padding. Either change the title to match the content or change the content to match the title. i.e., move the page to 1998 NFC Championship Game or trim the page down to the details most relevant to the kick itself, then go from there. And then if you're still gung-ho on getting this to FA, consider nominating it for good article status first. I'm not sure I've ever seen an article skip GA and go straight to FA; it's practically mandatory. Lizard (talk) 08:08, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is a notable article. I think this article should either get deleted, or get merged into the NFC Championship Game article. This play may be notable for NFL fans, but I don't think you should make an article on one play. Spike789 🇺🇸 00:53, 7 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
