Is my ambiguity sensor numb?[edit]

Hello. I removed the hatnote that pointed to the disambiguation page Gaza per WP:NAMB because I thought that the name Gaza City unambiguously referred to the subject of this article. Gaza does not redirect here, either, so people who are looking for the article on the Gaza Strip are not going to be coming here instead. According to Gaza, this city is the only one that is called Gaza City; the others have different names, like Little Gaza. But my edit was reverted. Would someone please explain the ambiguity of Gaza City? --Joshua Issac (talk) 21:07, 29 July 2014 (UTC)

The city is called Gaza, but not by Wikipedia. It is also referred to more formally as Gaza City. See the lead "Gaza (/ˈɡɑːzə/;[4] Arabic: غزة‎ Ġazzah, IPA: [ˈɣazza]; Hebrew: עזה‎ Azzah; Ancient Greek: Γάζα), also referred to as Gaza City". The entire Strip is also called Gaza. See the lead "The Gaza Strip (/ˈɡɑːzəˈstrɪp/;[1] Arabic: قطاع غزة‎ Qiṭāʿ Ġazzah [qɪˈtˤɑːʕ ˈɣazza]), or simply Gaza". Gaza is a genuinely ambiguous term that Wikipedia does it's best to manage. Even with the hatnote, time and time again editors mistakenly update the population figures of this article to reflect the population of the other Gaza, the Strip, that contains this Gaza. Strange but true. See the article history and search for pop. NAMB is a guideline, and while I agree with your interpretation of it from a literal perspective, I think anything we can do to highlight the genuine ambiguity that exists in the real world for readers is probably preferable in this instance. Having said that, it's unclear whether it actually helps. Sean.hoyland - talk 09:25, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
Gaza is ambiguous. People may type it into the search box expecting to see the article on Gaza City, the Gaza Strip, or something else. However, Gaza City is not ambiguous, and I do not think that anyone types in and expects to see the article on the Gaza Strip or the Gaza governorate, instead of the one on the city. The name of the article has been unambiguous since the article on the city was moved from Gaza to Gaza City on 10 March 2014.
If editors keep changing the population figures, I suggest placing HTML comments next to the relevant source code to let editors know that this article is about the city, and that statistics referring to Gaza might be about the Gaza Strip and not the city. --Joshua Issac (talk) 20:22, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Ancient period[edit]

I improved section by removing Philistines and Caananites from ancient period - these ethnomyms apply to peoples that vanished from history centuries before the Romans arrives. Also removed Persians as improbable. Editor Huldra needs to brings If Huldra wants to put them back in, she needs to bring a reliable source.ShulMaven (talk) 16:59, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

The source is already there, http://www.thisweekinpalestine.com/details.php?id=1958&ed=133&edid=133:

The city’s most luminous era began when it succumbed bloodlessly to Roman rule in 63 BC. All the coastal cities of Palestine-Gaza, Ascalon, Isdud and Jaffa-grew in the following centuries. The unity of empire left trade unhindered along all major routes, and sea traffic from Gaza’s port increased. A 500-member senate governed Gaza, and in the streets could be found Philistines, Greeks, Romans, Canaanites, Phoenicians, Jews, Egyptians, Persians and Bedouin. Under Rome, Gaza’s mint stamped out coins adorned with the busts of gods and emperors. One hundred thirty-five years after the birth of Christ, the emperor Hadrian personally inaugurated wrestling, boxing and oratorical competitions in Gaza’s new stadium, which soon became famous from Alexandria to Damascus.

Terrorism?[edit]

Why is there hardly any mention of terrorism? Hamas- and Islamic Jihad-sponsored terrorism is a major component of life in Gaza City. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Blocky1OOO (talkcontribs) 15:14, 12 November 2014‎ (UTC)

Do you live in Gaza City? Otherwise, what do you base your statement on? As for Wikipedia policy, see WP:TERRORIST. As noted, there are exceptions. Say, if an attack is noted in books by historians as a "terrorist attack", then the word can be used. Cheers, Huldra (talk) 22:36, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
