I see there is a very good article on the Gunbarrel Highway at the wikitravel web page at wikitravel.org/en/Gunbarrel_Highway. Should these articles be combined? Or would a link suffice? Or even a redirect? What's the procedure regarding similar stories on different wiki projects? Gazjo 04:32, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good spotting. While I am not a Wiki policy wonk, I can say that as the photos used on the wikitravel page should be GNU, (and should be on WikiCommons) then we can safely include them in the article. We can use the information in the wikitravel article although as the wikitravel article is focussed on how to travel the Gunbarrel, some editing could help the wikipedia article include bigger sections on the history and current use of the Gunbarrel. I hope this is clear. Cheers --Roisterer 05:40, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I added a bit on the history and a link to wikitravel. I'm sure it can be improved upon though. Gazjo 07:03, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good start. If you don't want to add a picture from the Wikitravel page (which should be GNU - Free Use), I can do that when I have a moment. Other than that I might try to link a few more words and see who else wants to edit. --Roisterer 13:18, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Len Beadell's first road

[edit]

Fellow (gender neutral) editors. The articles Len Beadell and Gunbarrel Highway both erroneously state that the Gunbarrel Highway was Len Beadell’s first road. The first road he built was from Mabel Creek Station to Emu in Feb-Mar 1953. The Gunbarrel Highway was begun in November 1955. There is enough evidence in his own books to back up this fact, as well as from other sources, which I can cite. It is my intention to correct the error in both articles, provided there are no objections, by the end of May 2011. The change will involve a partial re-write. If one of you out there chooses to do so beforehand, well that is your prerogative. --Summerdrought (talk) 07:17, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gunbarrel Road sign

[edit]

Ref: the Gunbarrel Hwy sign photographed at Wiluna WA, has anyone noticed the way Ayers Rock is spelt on the sign? I'll bet that will not be fixed in a hurry!

Map not strictly correct

[edit]

The Map on the main article has the caption, "The Gunbarrel Highway is shown in black". The section between Warakurna and Warburton (depicted correctly as the Great Central Road) was never part of the Gunbarrel Highway, as it was built at a later date. The original road went north-west from Giles parallel to the Rawlinson Range, before dipping down almost due south towards Warburton. At Jackie Junction some 55km north of Warburton, the Gunbarrel Highway turned west and continued to Carnegie Station. The Gunbarrel Highway as depicted needs amendment. Thanks for your comment Summerdrought. When I drew this map back in October last year, I pretty much visualised the German article, which is more about today's route than about the highway's history. I just rechecked, my map perfectly matches the German description (de:Gunbarrel_Highway#Verlauf). Of course, that description may be wrong -- but I'd like to keep the map matching it as long as it isn't changed. However, if you supply me with a sketch of the Old Gunbarrel, I'm happy to include that in the map -- it would be a great enhancement as the old course actually is of particular interest (I wonder why I left it out at first?). I'd love to hear from you! -- Christallkeks (talk) 21:19, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would also like to point out that the Gunbarel Highway ends near Warburton and has never extended south or east of these points. The map is very misleading, especially the way that the Wiluna-Carnegie road is clearly shown to not be part of the Gunbarrel Highway. Wiluna-Carnegie Road is not the official name either - the official names are Wongawol Road and Carnegie Road.203.23.209.190 (talk) 14:39, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A corrected map has been produced and will shortly replace the incorrect one.Summerdrought (talk) 02:34, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
