Pronounciation

[edit]

How does one pronounce Týr anyway? I've been saying 'Tear', but thats probably wrong. Any ideas, and should it be added to the article? -- GXice 14:28, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

i'm no good with IPA, but there's an IPA writing of the band's name on one of the other wiki's, i'll add it. ...Patrick (talk, cntrb.) 04:11, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's pronounced like Toy-er, and the Faroese would flick the R at the end in a short trill. the 'ý' is like 'oy'. --Crescent Armada 14:45, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am faroese myself, and I can attest that the faroese pronunciation of Týr sounds pretty much like the english pronunciation of Toy'er, with a strong R in the end. But I believe that the correct english pronunciation of Týr sounds exactly the same as the english pronunciation of 'Tir' would sound. Sammi84 (talk) 18:07, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Faroe language?

[edit]

I just heard Tyr's music today... at first i thought it was death metal in Cantonese & Mandarin...hahah...way cool.... are they singing in Faroe?

- Viriatus

I too wish to know if they're singing in Danish or Faroese. --Burbster 20:47, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

well as an insane fan who owns the full discography, they have sung in english, faroese, and danish. but Heri speaks more languages. the songs in faroese are "Ormurin Langi", two lines at the end of "How Far To Asgaard", "Ólavur Riddararós", "Stýrisvolurin", the chorus in "The Edge", and "Regin Smiður". the only danish song is "Ramund Hin Unge". although in different interviews the band has hinted towards more foreign language songs as they seem to have more success with people who are interested in Faroese culture/music. they even hinted at being a purely faroese langguage band one day, though unlikely. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Eirik Raude (talkcontribs) .

They also have a song in norwegian (although they use some older words and the pronounciation is kinda funny); "Sinklars visa" --46.9.12.58 (talk) 18:43, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Death metal? I own the full discography and don't remember a single death metal song. It's all Folk/Progressive, with some power metalesque riffs here and there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.19.118.117 (talk) 19:49, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rewriting

[edit]

The history section especially is somewhat prose-like. Can anyone who knows a fair bit more about this band do a rewrite? --Burbster 19:42, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is written pretty bad. all those paragraphs int he members section should be moved into the history.Yellowxander (talk) 16:11, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

redirect?

[edit]

does anyone know how to redirect the search " tyr (band) " to " Týr (band) " ? I know you can't change the page for tyr to Týr but there's nothing wrong with changing " tyr (band) "

Like this? Tyr (band) Haukur 10:17, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
totally, thanx Eirik Raude 1:28, 9 August 2006

re:origin

[edit]

i saw it on some other pages and thought it could go here. i mean they were formed in denmark. ~~Patrick~~ 18:32, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Faroes have been an independent region of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948. The lived in the Faroes when they formed the band so it is not Denmark where the band was started. Dexter prog 15:20, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
According to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=823xCLZL1BY, they were all living in Copenhagen during the band's founding. However, they are all from the Faeroe islands, so, yeah :P Wikim3 00:11, 01 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

band photo

[edit]

would it be better to have picture of the band, rather than their logo? there was one before. maybe place the logo somewhere in the page. ~~Patrick~~ 01:53, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What's the difference?Dexter prog 15:23, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

well there's a picture of the band in the page now, so it doesn't matter anymore.Patrick (talk) 15:31, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Asatru

[edit]

Heri is a follower of the Asatru religion but the other members are not. It is fact. Just for reference if someone felt the need to add that to Tyr's wiki. Hesslich 06:14, 17 February 2007 (UTC) As far as i know, he is a Strong Atheist. —Preceding unsigned comment added by The celsius (talkcontribs) 00:10, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He's a "confessed atheist", according to his vlog on Youtube Wikim3 00:17, 01 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Influences

[edit]

Either a reference must be cited regarding the supposed similarity between Tyr and Dream Theater/Iron Maiden or these references should be removed permanently. They are essentially irrellevent anyway. I personally disagree with both of those comparisons and am a fan of all three bands, therefore, I am removing the "opinion" (as it surely is until cited by a band member or publication). I do realize that some of Joensen's favorite bands are Dream Theater and Iron Maiden, but there are too many influences to simply pick one or two and that information is already stored on Joensen's page.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.237.108.32 (talk) 03:31, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The only relation to Dream Theater is the progressive style. However, there was one (just ONE) song which made me wonder if I had put my player on Shuffle and it had skipped from Týr to Iron Maiden.--190.19.118.117 (talk) 19:50, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Berliner Institut für Faschismus-Forschung und Antifaschistische Aktion

[edit]

Something to consider... if Berliner Institut für Faschismus-Forschung und Antifaschistische Aktion does not merit its own Wikipedia page due to lack of notability, how is their accusation as detailed on this band's page in any way notable? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.101.49.64 (talk) 21:42, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Band name pronunciation

[edit]

I fixed up the pronunciation so it's up-to-date with the template (hovering your cursor over each letter of the English pronunciation helps you pronounce the word). I removed the "Toyer" from the infobox, which shouldn't have been there at any rate. However, it turns out that "toyer" and the original pronunciation were not compatible with each other. Since I don't know how to pronounce Týr, someone will have to double check the work and update it as needed. Here is the IPAc-en guide. Currently, the pronuncation is "toyer", which rhymes with boy-er. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 07:09, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The completely arbitrary pronunciation "toyer" was added by 71.123.174.55 on 19 March 2011. I can't see why you kept it, since you weren't sure whether it was correct. I had added the usual English pronunciation of the name of the band on 1 April 2010; see the lede of the article on Týr. --Omnipaedista (talk) 05:34, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah excellent. Thanks for explaining your edit. I didn't check the history to see who added it, and I wouldn't have known what to do with it at any rate. Fair enough! : ) – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 05:37, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
