From the article: "It appears that the lyric "Hail, hail, the gang's all here" had unofficially been added to Sullivan's melody many years before the publishing of the song. A Philadelphia Inquirer news item from April 1, 1898, for example, stated that during a raucous meeting of the Philadelphia Common Council, council members loudly sang, "Hail, hail, the gang's all here, what the h--- do we care! What the h--- do we care!"[1] Likewise, a Delaware state legislature session in March 1900 was disrupted when Democratic members loudly sang the song.[2] And these lyrics also appear in the closing measures of the 1915 song Alabama Jubilee."

There is nothing here which supports the claim that the lyrics had been added to the Sullivan melody before the song was published. There is evidence that the lyrics existed before the song was published, but no reference to the melody. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.68.134.1 (talk) 19:33, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

[edit]

c:File:Hail hail the gangs all here.jpg is captioned "Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here". Some of the highschoolers appear to be singing for sure. Maybe most are. Given the caption it is safe to assume they were singing "Hail, Hail, the Gang's All Here." As the article has no picture, it would be an improvement to add this picture to the article.--Epiphyllumlover (talk) 23:01, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"it is safe to assume" is not an adequate basis to prove that something is encyclopedic. It must be unquestionable that the persons in the photo are actually singing the song, for example if a news article says so. It is just as likely that the photo was captioned with this popular phrase and that the people in the photo are not singing the song. In addition, the photo is not a photo of famous people or a famous event, and it is not clear that it is WP:noteworthy. -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:18, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. I can't see any indication they are singing. The mouths are smiling and showing their teeth, but not open. I can't see how anyone could think they are singing. - SchroCat (talk) 17:27, 20 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Even if they are singing they could be singing anything! Jack1956 (talk)
