Ushahkal (उषःकाल) (1896) -- Historical or Social?[edit]

उषःकाल has been listed as a historical novel in this हरि नारायण आपटे entry. I vaguely remember (reading it in my childhood) as a social novel. Its protagonist is a Mr. Dandekar who calls himself Prof. Dandy (written in the novel as "ड्यांडी"; presumably in those days Marathi did not use the अर्धचन्द्र symbol to designate that English vowel), ostensibly to appear more anglicized. His love interest is a girl/woman called उषा, hence the name of the novel. By the end of the novel, he realizes his sycophancy of the gora saahib. उषा is partly responsible for this recognition. And, yes, he gets the girl!

If my memory is correct, that would surely make this a social novel. I don't remember anything historical about it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AjitDongre (talkcontribs) 20:26, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
