Untitled[edit]

Article looks as if it has been cut and pasted from somewhere without formatting being verified. This suggests possible copyright problems as well. --Dunstan 17:10, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to have been some work since then. I just did some adding of inline citations since this person had a shore but important role during a pivotal time in Hawaii's history. W Nowicki (talk) 02:46, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Move?[edit]

Why the ", Sr." at the end of this person's name? I have not found any source that uses it yet. There seems to have been a "Jr" but not very notable since I cannot even find out vital dates for him. Any objection if I move to the more common name Henry Ernest Cooper ? W Nowicki (talk) 18:13, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

American[edit]

I don't believe there should be any reluctance to call him American (but I didn't make any such change). In the US he was born, raised, educated, married. He had four children when he moved to Hawaii. It appears that he was an American expatriate and agitator there, and one sort of colonist. --P64 (talk) 16:00, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Careful with the word colonist, because with that goes into a lot of controversy and debate? The most neutral in my opinion is settler.

As for the American aspect, I don't think it matter. Where exactly would you like to insert this? We already mentioned he was born in the United States calling him American would just seem redundant to me. I would say it in the lead. Since they moved to Hawaii in 1890, perhaps "Henry Ernest Cooper (1857–1929) was an American lawyer who moved to the Kingdom of Hawaii and became prominent in Hawaiian politics in the 1890s." --P64 (talk) 18:54, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

... and add a second lead sentence, "He was the first Territory of Hawaii Attorney General, 1899–1900." These two sentences not only places him more clearly in Hawaii history but effectively convey some Hawaii history to ignorant readers (such as me yesterday), without spending words on details that do not belong in the lead. --P64 (talk) 19:07, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Palmyra Atoll facts[edit]

An 18 August 2017 edit introduced errors about H. E. Cooper's interests in land at Palmyra Atoll. Cooper wasn't "the first person to hold ownership over all of Palmyra" (Johnson Beswick Wilkinson and later his widow Kalama were). He wasn't "eventually awarded [complete] ownership", since the Hawaii Land Court and Territorial Supreme Court upheld the contrary part-interests owned by Hawaiians, in the cited cases. The Supreme Court recognized some in the 1947 opinion. Also, the Home Islands are not "co-owned today by 3 of his heirs". Dozens of Cooper heirs in the land records co-own interests today, along with claims of the Hawaiians' current heirs, and other co-owners include companies, a bank, a judge, and apparently a British Lord. Still others own buried treasure rights (disputed) there and in the rest of the atoll. I'll remove the unsupported errors but I don't have good sources for the peculiar facts above that only show up in federal court land records that are not online.2605:6000:ED0D:9E00:C99D:6928:8614:77DA (talk) 15:49, 19 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The citations for one error, namely: ^[1], ^[2], and ^[3], mis-state the result of the original Land Court (Application No. 223) and Territorial Supreme Court opinions, which decided the disputed land title claim against Henry Cooper's attempt to obtain absolute title, in favor of the native Hawaiians Maui and Clarke.
