Confused[edit]

The discussion of Ganswindt's space vehicle is thin. Willy Ley was a friend of Ganswindt and has an excellent discussion of this in his book. Did he invent an heliocopter just to raise this space vehicle? According to Ley, Ganswindt didn't design this space vehicle until around 1890 and the first proven publication is 1891.

Ganswindt had a poor grasp of the physics of reactive propulsion. He believed the air-pushing misconception of rockets and specifically stated that they would not work in space. He thought reaction would only work if solid objects were thrown against the spaceship. This was to be done with steel cartridges exploded with dynamite. Half the cartridge shell would fly into space and the other half would strike a shield on the spaceship to impart impulse to it. DonPMitchell (talk) 04:33, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
