Disambiguation[edit]

This talk page was, like the Hierapolis article itself, redirected to Mabug. I removed the redirect to that eastern "twin" that is known under many names in order to occupy this name here by the better known Hierapolis on top of the Pamukkale hot springs. The Hierapolis I know is no where near the Euphrates. It's in the Meander river valley, just up slope from Pamukkale, waaay over on the western edge of the Anatolian plateau. Is there some conflation going on here? --Fulminouscherub 00:18, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree -- this is not the same spa-resort Hierapolis that is part of the Pamukkale World Heritage Site near Denizli. -- CMP, 11 Feb 06

The pictorial material published there by me is not subject to restrictions of use in this format. The decision over screen selection, Upload and/or mounting an externally link on my web page I would like to leave to the authors of the article. --ozes

We sometimes get away with no references(footnotes) when we have a stub article. Thanks to a recent editor, this article has matured tremendously. It is unlikely that we can progress further with credibility without some footnotes. Again, your improvements are astonishing! But again, this article is very weak on footnotes. I figure a good article "should" have about 3 or 4 per previewed page. It's now has just over one.

The Apollo article mentions it just as in a aside. Anyway, it has always been the custom to incorporate local deities and local religious customs into the new religion, e.g. early Christianity did this also with Christmas. JoJan 14:52, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Apollo[edit]

Jacob Burckhardt claims that when the statue of Apollo was processed annually at Hierapolis, the statue "decided" which direction to go. An interesting twist. Would rather find a more recent online reference, but can't. Student7 20:41, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You probably confuse Hierapolis with Hierapolis Bambyce, an ancient town in Syria, where there was a xoanon of Apollo. Such a (wooden ?) figure could move its hands and thus give directions. See at Hierapolis and at De Dea Syria JoJan 15:04, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Relevance of legends[edit]

What relevance do the legends in the Legends section have to the city? It seems like somebody took some random legends and added them to the article without including any relevance to the city? "GRECO-ROMAN" city[edit]

There is no such thing as a 'Greco-Roman' city.

Hierapolis is a Greek city period; that continues to be inhabited during the Roman period. From Phrygian (non-clasical) Greek to Ionian Greek, mostly likely as a transition that resulted from 'Hellenization' (also a misleading term). The Romans usually changed the name or site development of a city that they 're-founded' or newly settled. The constant settlement and use of this city is historically apparent. The term Greco-Roman is excessively used in many contexts as a derisive means of minimizing and dismissing the importance of the direct and specific Hellenic history of any subject matter in question where the term is inappropriately used. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.252.13.10 (talk) 08:02, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The town was destroyed by earthquakes and rebuilt from the ground up with imperial funds, imperial architects, and imperial standard planning. If we're doing things tout-suite, the later city was Roman period. But why be so fussy? — LlywelynII 04:44, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Structures/archaeology[edit]

As someone has noted, there is a lot of overlap between the structure and archaeology sections. I think the reason for that is because this is an archaeological site and so all the structures would fit under that category as well. WP:ERA & ENGVAR[edit]

Cleanup[edit]

Did what I could for most of the article. The museum section still needs some combing through, since it is mostly unsourced and currently reads like it was written by the local tourism board ("most beautiful", "important", etc.), and the "archeology" section needs to be combined with the identical subject matter already dealt with in "significant structures" instead of duplicating everything (what's up with that? bad merge?). — LlywelynII 04:49, 2 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I moved up archeology and merged it with "significant structures." I think it is okay except I got confused in the Necropolis sections. Not sure that they can't be shortened or improved.
