Orthography?

[edit]

If I recall correctly, Derbyshire (1979) says that he used "ɨ" in his books about Hixkaryana, but that the local orthography uses "á" for that phoneme. (He wrote when the IPA wasn't fully standardized yet; I'm not sure "ɨ" wasn't a common symbol for what we now represent as /ɯ/.) But I don't have the book anymore to check. --Jim Henry (talk) 15:06, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

English pronunciation

[edit]

The IPA for English feature is designed to be international and relevant to all the major dialects of English. When it is not, dialectal differences are indicated specifically. In this case, the given pronunciation includes the sequence /ærj/. The first segment /ær/ represents the "arr" sound in "marry", however that is pronounced in your dialect. The /j/ represents the "y" in "yes". In non-rhotic accents, this is an impossible sequence, as /ær/ only occurs before a vowel and /j/ is a consonant. I would assume, in a non-rhotic accent, the /j/ would be replaced with /i/ (the vowel as the "y" in "happy"). Can anyone find a source for the pronunciation of Hixkaryana in a non-rhotic accent? 87.151.165.21 (talk) 16:50, 25 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
