Accessibility

[edit]

From http://www.lighthouseratings.com/Holland/ : "Accessibility Score: 3

For the most part, visitors to the light will have to view it from across the channel at Holland Park. There are special visits where one can get on the same side of the channel as the lighthouse, and be able to touch it, but these visits are regulated because the access is through a private neighborhood. One might want to contact the town to inquire on this access."

From http://home.neo.rr.com/rodsphotogallery/Lighthouses/Michigan/HTML/HollandHarbor.html : "The light is located along the end of the south pier, but access is restrictive. A guard must grant permission to pass into a private community to visit up close."

These agree with the originally added section. I remember "sneaking in" by bicycle while in college in Holland although I can't recall, it may be a gated community with a guardhouse there. Rmhermen 02:56, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

From what I recall of my vists there in this past spring and previous summer, you do have to cross private property, but it was all via a paved road and walkway and while there was a guardhouse on the road, there was no attempt to stop us as pedestrians or question us in any way (vehicles though very likely would have had to belong to owners or have been invited) . Maybe we were just lucky or looked like we belonged there. And we were with people who kept their boat at the marina (which is not a part of that private propery near the lighthouse), so they knew exactly where to go. I'm sure that helped. I don't know, but accessibility didn't seem like that big of a deal. User:Bkonrad 13:25, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There is indeed a guardhouse just past Eldean marina and Piper restaurant. The public road (South Shore Drive) ends at that point and does become a private road. There used to be a resort (Point West) beyond where the guardhouse now stands. You used to be able to park there and walk out to Big Red (the hike is about a mile if I remember correctly). But after Point West closed, some nearby cottage owners bought the property. With the guardhouse constructed around 1997, public access was severely restricted. It's possible that those walking in are not questioned as long as they don't have beach, picnic, or fishing gear. But those driving past the guardhouse are required to park in a designated parking spot near the lighthouse and walk the rest of the way. Dwp49423 15:13, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
