Some thoughts[edit]

  • I think you could do away with that first sentence, as obviously an honour is far more than buildings and land; the "buildings" will be fairly specific, e.g. castles and manor houses, whereas the word suggests they could be anything - barns, sheds, etc.; and I don't suppose it's possible to speak of the honour in the present tense...? I'd probably put "William Peverel (c. 1050 - c. 1115) was granted the earliest members of the Honour of Peverel by ..."
  • It's not strictly true to say that "the Honour of Peverel" is recorded in Domesday Book, as DB's organised by counties - meaning, if you haven't discovered this already, that in DB you have to re-construct something like an honour by trawling through all the counties! Beware also of castles, e.g. Bolsover appears not to have been built until the 12th century. I'd probably put something like "This substantial honour, traceable in Domesday Book, included numerous castles and manors, as follows:"
  • Counties ought to be given for each of the places mentioned.
  • I've changed the business about the forfeiture, and the king, as all land belonged to the king, and he would normally choose who to give forfeited land to. But you might have reasons for putting it differently!

I'm sure there'll be more! I've already done a bit of a tidy. Cheers. Nortonius (talk) 22:38, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
