Article Expansion[edit]

I know a great deal about the Hotel's history. I would like to see some info included in the article but do not have the sources to back me up. If anyone has sources on the following please let me know or add the info yourself.

  • Design - The Sheraton group based the building design from a template they have used on several of their hotels around the world (the only difference is the HCC made the owners trim several floors from the design). I dont know which hotels but a mention would be notable.
  • Construction - Anyone who walks around the building will see the first several meters have a orange colour brick instead of the standstone colour. This was the original intended colour of the building, the HCC made the owners change the colour to suit the building's surroundings.
  • Reason for Sheraton's departure - The Sheraton group wanted to expand the building over a street via a Sky bridge. I'm not sure if it was going to be over campbell street to where the dunn st carpark is located or over Macquarie street to where the old bus yards were (current woolstore hotel). This expansion would have made the hotel considerably larger, when the HCC refused the application for redevelopment the hotel was put up for sale. Grand Hotels International purchased the hotel on the condition that they also aquired the managment rights.
  • A Silver Service Restaurant - used to exist at the hotel (first Sullivans and then later Meehans), but was closed due to revenue loss.
  • Federation concert Hall - Large expansion of the hotel was undertaken in 1998 with federal funds. Expansion included Federation concert hall and federation ball room. The state government paid at least 10 years rent for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra to use the Federation concert hall when ever they needed. Opened in 2000.
