[Untitled][edit]

Our only remotely contemporary source for information about this Hugh is the 1088 chronicle of Hariulf, chronicler of Saint-Riquier, which says nothing about his parents or other ancestry, and gives no basis for a supposed birthdate of "c. 970". The idea that he was the son of a count of Ponthieu named Hildouin by a woman called Hersende de Montreuil is entirely fanciful; it persists only due to its endless promulgation in amateur geneologies. As Hariulf the chronicler himself says, Hugh never called himself "Count of Ponthieu"; his son Enguerrand was the first to adopt that title. There is also basically no evidence that this particular Hugh was the "Hugo I" who married Gisela, daughter of Hugh Capet, but I've left that claim untouched because so many historians have accepted it. pnh (talk) 11:02, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
