Not Spanish Bluebells[edit]

The bluebells in the picture for this article don't look very much like hispanica. the flowers are all pendant and are not particularly wide-mouthed. They clearly aren't non-scripta either. They are surely the hybrid between the two × massartiana. Pure hispanica is very rare in the UK, a picture to be used here should be of plants from its native range - these are from a botanical garden in Vienna. I agree entirely; the picture is clearly not H. hispanica, and is probably the hybrid. I have replaced it by one from Commons which looks right to me, although the details of where it was photographed aren't given. I have slides of the true species photographed in Andalucia; I'll try scanning them to see if one would be better given that it has known provenance – unless anyone else can find such a photo? Quick move Peter, well done! The flowers in the photo you found are much more patent and the 'bells' are more open. The stigmas appear blue too, but aren't very visible. It's also more gracile and doesn't seem to have the vigorous habit of the hybrid. Now I can take off my scholarly robes and return to the Yowser's natural habits...
