Moving Page[edit]

It has been suggested that this article be moved to Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. (Discuss here) — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 06:27, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced & NPOV[edit]

This article, as mentioned in the previous tag, needs rewriting to avoid looking like an essay or a review. Facts only please; no point of views.

And as for the facts, support them with credible resources. Think about your audience--it's the whole world. Noone will appreciate blatant promotion without credible sources (newspapers, journals, books, etc.) to back it up. Perhaps someone from the current batch, or an alumnus, can work on it. Keep the tags until you are satisfied with the page. They will make sure that if not you, someone else will work on the page.

For a good article, you can refer to educational institutions in the list of Featured Articles in Wikipedia. s1 14:17, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

no need[edit]

thomso is a very big event, though its very much related to IITR, bt it needs a completely diffferent page as it includes lots of details

My views[edit]

I'm not good at using wikipedia so pardon me for being so wikipedia-illiterate.

1.I feel apart from the association of being a cultural festival held at IIT Roorkee there is no other connection i.e. participation, sponsorships, judges, prizes all that are supposed to be in a festival.

2.We are quite serious about this festival as you must have seen a separate web page(for those who want to clarify please google on domain registration). We could have had one in our institute site, but a separate web page is to show the level of Thomso. So a separate wiki page is justified as much.

I wish you would learn that this is not an event but much more than an event. It is A festival, occurs on yearly basis in which a lot of people are eagerly waiting for. For a community of students in Uttarakhand, U.P., Delhi it's like a musical festival or a film festival. Also I invite you to Thomso. Please do take your time off and come here, then maybe you can actually decide for yourself. Until then it would be wise to enjoy the festival instead of discussing for such a small thing. There are a lot of important issues than this which need to be addressed.

I hope you see the light now

Sunny

WP:INDIA Banner/Uttarakhand workgroup Addition[edit]

Note: {{WP India}} Project Banner with Uttarakhand workgroup parameters was added to this article talk page because the article falls under Category:Uttarakhand or its subcategories. Should you feel this addition is inappropriate , please undo my changes and update/remove the relavent categories to the article -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 13:32, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Restructuring[edit]

I think the whole page needs a overhaul and a structure smilar to MIT or IIT B should be created.--Ambuj.iitr (talk) 16:56, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unrelated Paragraph on MCA in overview[edit]

There is a complete paragraph on the MCA programme of IIT Roorkee in the Overview section that doesnt make sense beacuse there are a lot of courses and all have equal importance. If one was write about them, even then they should be written in academic section not in overview and then again either cover all the branches or none.

@above - done, did a lot of clean up in Academic section, removed all these un-necessary/irrelevant details. abhi (talk) 10:56, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A good initiative, but copy pasting from the website is a copyright violation, please be more careful in the future. I rewrote the section completely. --Muhandes (talk) 12:16, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oops! I am new to wiki editing, totally forgot about the copy right stuff. Thanks. abhi (talk) 08:03, 7 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

I propose to merge University of Roorkee into Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. A former name of the same institute should not have its own article - it should be mentioned in the history section. --Muhandes (talk) 10:16, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Expand and research for citations[edit]

The article needs more content and more references so instead of just deleting unreferenced portions please try to do some research and insert references. Please follow this Wikipedia policy: "If a claim is doubtful but not harmful, use the [citation needed] tag, which will add "citation needed," but remember to go back and remove the claim if no source is produced within a reasonable time."

Also before deleting large portions it is better to discuss here first. abhi (talk) 08:19, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Though lack of sources was a secondary reason, the sections were removed mainly because the material was either trivial (the names of internal committees in the institution), or more importantly since it lacks reliable independent secondary sources. Wikipedia is not a place to promote an institution by basically repeating all the material from its website. I thought this was stated quite clearly in the edit summary, and if not - I am saying it now as clearly as I can. By putting more such material you are not solving the problem, you are making it worse. You are saying these sections need expansion - I am saying unless secondary sources are provided they need severe trimming.
As for discussion before deletion, I went bold. --Muhandes (talk) 23:59, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I understand and I agree that we need to make it more encyclopedic. That is why I am saying let us try to find more references. IMO, it would be easier to enhance the article incrementally in smaller steps. Add little content with primary sources>>look for secondary sources>>Trim unnecessary portions
Let me know your views. - abhi (talk) 01:42, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Very well. --Muhandes (talk) 13:12, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Institute Anthem[edit]

I think the article should talk about the Institute Anthem "Jayati Jayati Vidya Sansthan", which was composed by famous poet Sumitranandan Pant. However I could not find much on web to support it, will try more. Please try if you can find it. Best would be to get the complete text on wiki commons with translation and link it to this article. - abhi (talk) 07:19, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

found this article to support this. Which place would be the best to mention this - a new section 'Heritage'? 'Interesting Facts'? or a sub-section under history? - abhi (talk) 06:25, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Interesting Facts" sections are strictly against WP:TRIVIA. The best would be if you could find a source (offline or online) for the year in which it was composed, and add it to the history section. I don't think you have enough material for a legacy section. --Muhandes (talk) 15:39, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, i'll try to find year of composition and also will try finding more material for heritage section. - abhi (talk) 08:57, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Articles on Alumni[edit]

I have started working on articles for some famous alumni on my user space, we can move them to article space once they are ready. Contributions welcome:

Proposed merge with Cognizance (festival)[edit]

Not sufficiently notable to stand on its own but would make a good section in the article on the university. RadioFan (talk) 00:18, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - Well if you see the Culture section in Template:Indian Institutes of Technology, there are some festivals which have their own pages, and a few others which do not. I believe the Cognizance article can be expanded substantially. It has also received mention in the media, independent of the institute. Anir1uph | talk | contrib 16:19, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose - I agree with Anir1uph. It will be better to expand the separate article on festivals rather than putting lot of festival details in main article. In the main article it should just mention 2-3 lines on the festivals and no more. However, if there is not sufficient material on Congnizance alone then it will be better to expand the articles scope to include all students festivals of IIT Roorkee - Thomso and Srishti. - abhi (talk) 17:27, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Restoring the Stature of IITR to World Level as enjoyed earlier by University of Roorkee[edit]

At present the ranking of IITR is sixth on many parameters amongst all IITs.There is a need to consider and act to restore the Stature of IITR to its glorious level. Problems as viewed now and other suggestions are welcome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr Vijay Kumar (talkcontribs) 05:42, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
