I cannot imagine how this would not be notable. His death has been national news for well over a year, with one major paper in particular (The Globe and Mail) having a column that was, for a while, dedicated to coverage of the inquest surrounding the incident. That said, the point on sources is certainly reasonable, and I will add them once I figure out the syntax. While I flesh out this article I intend to draw heavily from http://www.bcnorth.ca/magazine/pages/Debi/ian/ian1.htm and from http://mostlywater.org/node/5303 . The Globe and Mail articles, unfortunately, are mostly subscriber only, is there a way to reference them? At least one is at: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinions/columnists/Gary+Mason.html at the bottom of the page. Knave75 21:47, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the notability tag. Knave75 18:27, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sanchom, I like what you have done with this page. Would it be possible to work in some of the events that made this a notable national incident? For example, there was much ado about the initial lack of transparency in the investigation, including the RCMP representative who (infamously?) said that "the public doesn't have the right to know". Offhand, my writing style is less NPOV on this subject, so I'd rather you did it, but otherwise, I'd be happy to do it myself.Knave75 (talk) 05:12, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability[edit]

With no disrespect indended - Ian Bush's death is notable, but he himself is not. He cannot be notable from only one event. This article should be moved to Ian Bush incident or merged into Scandals surrounding the RCMP‎. - 15:05, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

At any rate, this article gives no indication why even the event is notable, and should be expanded to include the controversy/public outcry etc. - TheMightyQuill (talk) 15:12, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. This incident was notable, but as per guidance from WP:ONEEVENT, a separate biography is unlikely to be warranted. We are to cover the event and not the person, which I think has been done... just the title hasn't been changed yet. I think either a move to Ian Bush incident or a merge into the scandals article could work (I've already merged the text actually since the previous text at that article was unsourced and not neutral). If we do the latter, but we have to make sure that this incident has been referred to as a scandal (or something along those lines). There's a bit of discussion at Talk:Scandals_surrounding_the_RCMP#Scandal discussing more exactly what I meant by the previous sentence. Sancho 06:40, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So merge it is? - TheMightyQuill (talk) 15:12, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. Sancho 18:52, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ian Bush Incident sounds fine to me, perhaps I will try to flesh out some sources regarding the controversy/public outcry. Knave75 (talk) 04:25, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"incident" seems a rather weasel-ish wording for what is "the killing". The killing of Ian Bush is descriptive, Ian Bush incident isn't.174.118.86.2 (talk) 17:00, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This page is still named Ian Bush, even after nearly 6 years since the issue was brought up. 72.218.243.116 (talk) 18:50, 17 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

POV and police-report copyvio[edit]

The tone of this smacks of an RCMP press release/spin cycle - especially listing Mr Bush's history of police incidents, which approaches biased slander and is typical or RCMP defamation-information in such cases. Also because it would appear whole chunks of this article are straight from a police report and/or press release, even though those are not copyrighted it's just copy-paste-vio. The terseness of the closing comment about Mrs Bush is unfortunate and downplays her ongoing campaign to seek justice for her son's murder....er, killing, if "murder" is POV because Cst Koester hasn't been charged with it (yet).174.118.86.2 (talk) 17:00, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree – googling updates shows these links where the BCCLA expresses a wish to challenge the findings in the cours & the Ian Bush website mentions the fellow having been struck three times with the gun and then shot in the back of the head, raisinging the physical impossibility etc etc. It also gives that he was better than the serial drunk the police report paints. The links are: [1] News Canada 2009 and support page: http://www.ianbushsupport.com/. Manytexts (talk) 06:41, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree also, Mr. Bushs' history of minor neighborhood shananagahns is not realivant and was likely put in by RCMP public relations. It should be removed. Jan. 26, 2012

Sources[edit]

I don't see a single source listed for the first and seemingly most substantial sections, "Incident" and "Arrest and Death". Although I'm not at present willing to hunt down the sources and list them (I'm inexperienced with Wikipedia and citation) it would be helpful if anyone who has contributed to the content of these sections took the time to show them to be credible. It says there was an inquiry through the Commission for Public Complaints Against the RCMP. Did anyone gain access to it? It's kind of frustrating to start without sources on Wikipedia and on something that happened seven years ago.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Discolust (talkcontribs) 01:38, 24 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to know why the article states that he was shot in the side of the head, consistent with the officer's statement of self-defense, when the coroner says it was in the back of the head??? source: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/man-shot-in-back-of-head-rcmp-shooting-inquest-told-1.651690 "Autopsy photos show he was shot in the back of the headwith the bullet lodged in his forehead. He has other fresh head injuries, as well as a large bruise on his inner thigh." As it stands, the wiki article is not factual. Gemlog (talk) 03:08, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The legal limit[edit]

Why does it matter what the legal limit for driving under the influence of alcohol is in relation to this police-related death? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.54.95.126 (talk) 20:05, 1 December 2014 (UTC) That's actually a very good point. He wasn't driving. Gemlog (talk) 03:10, 8 May 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gemlog (talkcontribs) 03:04, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ambiguity - "did not find his identification in [the] wallet"?[edit]

Where it says “did not find his identification in his wallet”, does that mean that (a) the officer checked Ian's wallet, but failed to find the ID which was actually present; (b) the officer checked the wallet, but correctly noted the absence of an ID; (c) the officer failed entirely to find the wallet, but the wallet contained an ID... ? 98.249.119.34 (talk) 05:13, 3 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
