Contemporary coverage[edit]

The Library of Congress has just launched a new website as a pilot for its ongoing newspaper digitisation project. It currently features 25 fully keyword-searchable titles from the years 1900-1910 in one of which - the New York Sun of 8 Oct 1910, p.2 - one can read a full contemporary report on the 'Ida the Goose' affair, which includes the names of the dead men and gives a less coloured account of the incident than did Asbury. Frank Beninsa, the man who hid behind Ida's skirts, was shot in the back but not in fact killed.
