Now considering it, this page should slowly be translated over into the pages dedicated to the individual Indianapolis 500s of given years, so that far more comprehensive coverage can be given. --Chr.K. 18:13, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Eventually I would like to see this page as summarizing the whole of the race's history with quite a bit of detail, but the exhaustive detail of each race going to each's respective pages. Thus, the story of the crowd singing Back Home Again in Indiana for the first time in 1919 should go to the 1919 page, but the USAC/CART split of 1979 would go to both, with a wider view being taken here. --Chr.K. 22:40, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I concur, if the direction of the page is going to become more "overall history," the name should be changed. We can move the rest of the short descriptions to the individual race pages, then start from scratch here with an intirely new format. I think several paragraphs from Indianapolis 500 can be moved here, to trim some fat off of that pageDoctorindy 13:46, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1981[edit]

This was posted in hidden tags in the 1981 listing:

-- Mario Andretti did not pass any cars while exiting the pit area; only Bobby Unser passed other competitors on the exit lane after passing the pit exit marker. During the same caution period, and after Unser's exit, Andretti and Foyt vied for restart position based on their exit order. Mario was convinced he had establised the postion, and Foyt finally relinquished position by clearly waving Mario around while they crossed the start finish line on the front straight. Foyt's gesture might have been in response to Unser's error. Foyt waited until he and Mario were in clear view of race officials before relinquishing position to make sure there would be no question about how Mario "passed" Foyt under the yellow--

Which lends a comment, because Mario is clearly observed passing at least one or two lap cars in the apron exiting the pits.
