Creole[edit]

This article does not even mention the fact that Italian american is different from the standard Dante-spoken italiano and italian dialects, being a wholly different bucket of fish and is called a dialect in several pages, but I think it is more correctly a creole. I found several articles which could help on Google, about the bastardised English words , viceversa. I have also posted on the Italian wikipedia help desk. --Squidonius (talk) 02:15, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How many of the italians of the newly unufied Italy (1861) that journeyed to US (first in 1880) even know how to speak Italian. Linguistically speaking Italy have a lot of romance languages (I believe some non romance also) that coexisted for centuries. Modern Italian descend from Tuscan Vulgar (Dante Spoken but different, very different imo). Even relatively recent Italo-American descent sometimes know "dialects" and no of the "national" Italian. I believe the new Reign of Italy imposed trough school learning of Modern Italian but I don't know how efficentely, post WW2 Italy really achieved that. Even today these languages coexist with Italian, in certain Regions there also bilingual signs. Anyway Italian does have an history before unification in Literature and upper classes. I'm not sure though if official documents of the various pre-unitary states were all in Italian.

EDIT: Ah someone add this, ok. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_language_in_the_United_States#Forms_of_Italian
