2002 World Cup[edit]

The article says Zanetti captained the side in the 2002 World Cup after Ayala got injured. Now as far as i remember, Simeone took the captaincy. Can anyone clarify this?Ucl1986 (talk) 18:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In November 2004, Zanetti was linked to Spanish giants Real Madrid for a possible summer move as his contract with inter was due to expire in 2007. However in the summer of 2005, Zanetti signed a contract extension until 2010.

"This renewal is a clear demonstration of how I'm keen on Inter and how Inter would like me to stay." Zanetti said after penning the new deal reiterating his desire to close out his career at the San Siro.

In April 2006, Zanetti hinted he could be ready to return to Argentina, amid rumours Boca Juniors wanted to sign him from Inter.

He added: "I have heard in the last days that Boca seems to be interested in me and, to tell the truth, that would be a very nice personal challenge for me because I never had the chance to play for any of the giant teams of Argentina.

"It's something that I owe to myself."

However he has continued on at Inter for his 12th season.
