Coma or vegetative state?[edit]

He’s described in most news sources as having been in a deep coma for the past 4 decades since his botched surgery, but judging by the way his widow spoke of his persistent condition, he had some degree of consciousness that doesn’t fit the criteria for being classified as comatose. He could open and close his eyes, respond to stimuli and was capable of breathing on his own. Is it in the spirit of accuracy to keep describing him as having been in a coma when he did not fit any standard medical definition of being in a comatose state?
