Birthplace? Elgin or Temple?[edit]

It seems, as a person born in modern times, it would not be that hard to determine where he was born, but there are sources online that state Elgin, TX and sources that state Temple, TX. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.147.113.66 (talk) 21:05, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment[edit]

"The Steelers chose with the first overall choice in the 1969 NFL draft." Is this true? NFL.com says that O.J. Simpson was selected 1st overall in that draft.

In reality, Joe Greene was selected in the first round by the Steelers, the Buffalo Bills did worse than the Steelers in 1968, so therefore, OJ was selected first, not Joe.

After XLIII Joe Green should now have SIX super bowl rings for his continuing work with the Steelers...

I thought Joe Greene gave the kid his cleats... not his jersey. Or... am I thinking of another commercial.

Needs Citations[edit]

Needs to mention that UNT renamed itself for him[edit]

@Bobak: I'm responding to this prehistoric comment to inform you that this is probably untrue. The article now reflects what I could find with my best efforts. It seems the Mean Green and Mean Joe most likely attained their nickname simultaneously. I'm not sure where the ESPN encyclopedia got their info, but I couldn't find any other reliable sources supporting its claim. Lizard (talk) 00:48, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Split off commercial section[edit]

The section is about the Coke commercial is pretty extensive, and could probably be split off to its own article, leaving just a few lines here, WP:SUMMARY-style. Anyone have an opinion on this? --Elonka 21:01, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, just my humble opinion here but I bulleted each of the ads/show references so it reads easier under "In popular culture", also I am here today because I just saw a Newhart rerun from 1983 where "Dick Louden" parodies the ad in the Boston Garden.   • I'd suggest moving the attitude and playing style section to the end of the article, after the pro career. It jumps into things that aren't covered yet, so seems out of place. Especially as it comes after a quote from Greene saying he wants to be remembered as not being mean, then shows some pretty mean things.

 Done I was assuming he was living elsewhere but I'm not sure. I removed that part.
  • "His wife of 47 years, Agnes, with whom he had three children, died in 2015." This is the first mention of her, and his children. Should it maybe go earlier in the article, perhaps in the early life section? Just feels odd to have it briefly mentioned here.
 Done Admittedly, writing about personal info is usually not my forte. I added some additional info into the early life section.
  • "He finished his career having played in 181 out of a possible 190 games..." and "His durability allowed him to play in 182 of a possible 190 games..." don't add up. What is the real number?

@PeeJay: This is what his page says regarding -- Joe:
As for the “Joe” part of his nickname (since his given name was Charles, not Joseph), that came from one of his aunts.
During a 2014 interview with NFL Films, Greene said that his aunt nicknamed him Joe due to his resemblance to boxing legend Joe Louis, who at the time of Greene's birth was in the middle of his 12-year reign as heavyweight champion.
"She thought I was hefty and bulky enough to be called Joe Louis," Greene said. "She started calling me Joe, and it kind of stuck." Bringingthewood (talk) 06:15, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
