Untitled[edit]

The discussion of the pamphlet wars is incomplete. There is no mention of the reason for the start of the dispute (the construction of the Apthorp's home in Cambridge, called by Mayhew a "bishop's palace,") or the concern that with the ordination of Apthorp to the newly built Christ Church, Cambridge's pulpit, a potential royal placeman had been installed in the colony. (see Harvard Divided).

Mayhew's ability to marshal the forces against the SPGFP--to the extent that Apthorp did indeed leave his native Massachusetts (he was a son of Grizzel East and Charles Apthorp of King's Chapel, Boston) and returned permanently to London--reflects both the strength of his (Mayhew's) insistence that such a figure should not be settled on the colony, and the surrounding climate of support for such views.Dellaroux (talk) 06:29, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
