Former good article nominee Jonny Wilkinson was a Sports and recreation good articles nominee, but did not meet the good article criteria at the time. There are suggestions below for improving the article. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake.

GAC[edit]

This article was graded on 7 criteria:

  1. Well-written: Neutral
  2. Factually accurate: Pass
  3. Broad: Pass
  4. Neutrally written: Neutral
  5. Stable: Pass
  6. Well-referenced: Fail
  7. Images: Pass

unfortunately, the article fails. It is not well referenced, with 3 references at the very top, and 2 at the very bottom, and none for most of the article. There are instances of weasel words and phrases, knocking the neutrality rating to "Neutral", and many rugby terms and organizations are not defined or linked, leaving anyone without knowledge of rugby completely in the dark. The article can be cleaned up, however, and I recommend resubmitting it to GAC, posibly after a Peer Review. --PresN 18:01, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Jonny or Wilkinson?[edit]

The article mixes up the two, as in "Jonny made the England squad" and "Wilkinson was selected at Fly-half".

Surely it should be one or the other.

I suggest Wilkinson except in a family context mentioning other Wilkinsons, i.e. his brother.

Unless anyone objects, I move to change. AJKGordon 21:02, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

You don't have to ask to make changes like that. Encyclopaedic language should be used throughout any Wikipedia piece. This article is not some swooning schoolgirl's diary. In fact I already altered this in the past [1] and it has been changed back to "Jonny", presumably by someone with some sort of mental retardation. Now sorted. Badgerpatrol 21:56, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
Sure, I know I didn't need to ask permission. Rather I needed to ask the correct encyclopaedic language. Glad you sorted it. Thanks. AJKGordon 18:39, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
Always surnames, never familiar names in the main body, and always a formal, businesslike tone. Apologies if the above comment was somewhat abrupt. Badgerpatrol 18:46, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Nationality[edit]

I just reversed an edit to the first line which changed 'English' to 'British'. I don't know why the change was made, but many other sportspeople from the UK have seen similar disputes over how to describe their nationality. There doesn't seem to be any actual policy on this subject, but I think it makes sense to call Wilkinson English: after all, he is, and he plays for the England national team. 'British', while accurate, is less specific and unnecessary, since English implies British in any case. I don't want to see an edit war over this (as there has been, for example, at Andy Murray (tennis)), so I'm trying to reach consensus here. Refs and cleanup[edit]

I have added the two above templates. The first because the career section has very few cites. Secondly, all the existing footnotes are placed before the punctuation when they ought to be after it according to MoS. SGGH speak! 07:45, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Height[edit]

Reverted article as the height template set him as 7cm shorter than he actually is.Londo06 12:03, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Caption for photo in infobox[edit]

Can I just get a feel for whether people think the caption for her picture in the infobox is worthwhile or not? Do you think the article's better with or without it?--Jeff79 (talk) 14:40, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

I think the article is better for a caption with the photo, mainly because of the date. --KingStrato (talk) 15:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Agreed.--Jeff79 (talk) 15:24, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

where is he now ?[edit]

The only thing I know at the moment is he now plays 4 Toulon. Why can`t he play 4 england again. He was so good! I`ts sad he`s gone. He is my hero come back Jonny Wilkinson Luke Funnell age:9 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.140.43.91 (talk) 18:58, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Thomas Castaignede, Serge Betsen, Sebastien Bruno, Raphaël Ibañez or other french players have gone in english championship without problem. The other way is right too. And the pound sterling is not as good as euro. Change your money ! Regards Ddfree (talk) 19:19, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Bio[edit]

Hello !

We are trying to better this article in french language : fr:Jonny Wilkinson. The italian article is a featured article. And we hope that the english article will be better too. As for France national rugby union team, All Blacks or Wales national rugby union team, the progress in a version make better the others.

I add some pictures. Anybody has Newcastle pictures free of rights in order to put them in Commons please ?

Regards ! Ddfree (talk) 19:14, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

The French language article is a featured article. We try to better Serge Blanco, David Campese, Jonah Lomu. We hope you'll do it too... Ddfree (talk) 09:18, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Teetotal?[edit]

I've heard the references to him being teetotal till the 2007 WC final, but in the documentary made around 2002-2003 he talks about drinking with the England team... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.206.116.151 (talk) 19:01, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

OBE or MBE?[edit]

Anyone know? The top gives 'OBE' whereas citation #2 gives 'MBE' (2007). It's unlikely he could have been promoted to OBE in such a short time. Cheers Bjenks (talk) 14:16, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Recent career[edit]

Why is this section in the article in this format? While it hints at recentism it also disrupts the chronological order of the article, and what qualifies as recent and why, and who decides? I would just cut it out and place the content in the relevant sections of his career. SGGH ping! 19:47, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Photo[edit]

I think the photo on the French version of this page (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonny_Wilkinson) looks a lot better than the one used here. Anyone else think it should be changed? Mr.Apples2010 (talk) 00:45, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

International Records[edit]

The numbers in this section are all outdated. Dan Carter has overtaken Neil Jenkins as second highest points scorer, and since Wilko and Carter are still both playing these numbers will change again every match144.132.241.6 (talk) 12:35, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Best Placekicker ever?[edit]

'He is often considered the best placekicker ever, a title shared with New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter' -How is to be often considered something a title? The author of this has clearly written a statement which they believe to be true, used the phrase 'often considered' to avoid referencing, and then attempted to turn something which is clearly a subjective viewpoint into a fact by refering to it as a title which it is not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Matty3891 (talkcontribs) 00:20, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Career highlights section[edit]

I'm pretty sure this is shouldn't be here, and classifies as WP:OR; anyone agree or disagree with me? Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 18:07, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
