Key fobs have key rings on them, Key rings are just the metal loop that you put keys on, and a Key chain is a key ring populated with keys and other key rings. A key chain can also be a chain that attaches to you belt loop with a key ring on the end of it. At least this is what these items are in U.S. Midwest dilect.

How does this relate to keychain and keyring? Someone merge, please, who's familiar with the term. [[User:Meelar|Meelar (talk)]] 20:37, 2004 Sep 7 (UTC)

Etymology

Can anyone clarify what "fob" means...is it an acronym? abbreviation?

It is actually a word, fob is a adornment that hangs from a chain or ring. --Thax 21:46, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please add the etymology to the article. Jidanni (talk) 04:19, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is NOT synonymous with the term keychain. There are several Mercedes models where there is no actually key for the car, only keyless entry, a fob you keep in your pocket, an da start button which starts the car only if the fob is somewhere in the cabin.
