Kingston railway station redirect[edit]

I've restored Kingston railway station as a redirect here simply because all of the links inbound appear to be for this article. Once those links are fixed it can redirect to the disambiguation page at Kingston station and this article will no longer require a hatnote. MRSC (talk) 10:47, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. Do you happen to know if that get done by a bot these days or is it still a manual job? -Arb. (talk) 12:59, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Opposition to station[edit]

I have met several statements that vested interests opposed letting a railway into Kingston and so:

  • the South West Main Line ran south of Kingston with the first "Kingston station" on the Ewell Road then moved to the present site of Surbiton station (and so renamed when the line from Twickenham was built) and
  • the line from Twickenham either actually ended at Hampton Wick and was carried over the Thames later, or the opposition was overruled and the line reached Kingston but too late to stop the building of Hampton Wick station.

This reference[1]would says the line temporarily ended at Hampton Wick. The L&SWR must have been intent on having a bridge to Kingston to have put Hampton Wick station on an embankment, there used to be several level crossings between Strawberry Hill and Hampton Wick.

Has anyone more substantial information about whether Hampton Wick was a temporary terminus??--SilasW (talk) 11:57, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
