History and Arabs

[edit]

So I'm confused: were the Zanzibari slavers Arab, or not, and what are the sources for that? what is meant here by "erroneously"?Themalau 10:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would think that this is the standard confusion when you start talking about Arab influenced cultures interacting with sub-Saharan ones, with the all the consequent intermarriage and cultural mixing. There are similar issues with the Darfur conflict page, where most of the editing appeared to be over the difference between cultural Arabs vs ethnic Arabs vs ethnic blacks, with nobody actually bothering to note that the populations are so intermixed in these border areas that distinctions are quite arbitrary. Take a look at the image on Tippu Tib and try to match it to an "Arab" stereotype. - BT 14:49, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Has anyone else heard the definition: "Kisangani, the central African Bruxelles"? 80.186.205.118 (talk) 08:13, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Its current wording doesn't help much either. It now reads: "slavers from Zanzibar, traditionally called "Arabs" by European writers of the time". My question is, whether or not they are "Arabs" by whatever definition is being questioned, why is this being hashed out on this page, when there are other Wikipedia articles that takes this without question? The very use of Arab here is immediately followed by another article titled "Congo-Arab War" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congo%E2%80%93Arab_War in which the first sentence includes: "between the forces of Belgian King Leopold II's Congo Free State and various Zanzibari Arab slave traders" similarly articles on Zanzibar and the Zanzibar Revolution also mention Arabs specifically. This article has literally over 100 red links. This page is an eyesore because of it. I plan to begin removing them. Just wanted to drop a note here announcing that in advance. Joefromrandb (talk) 06:54, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology of Stanleyville/Stanleystad

[edit]

I feel like it is implied that Stanleyville/Stanleystad was named after Sir Henry Morton Stanley, but that fact is never explicitly stated in the text. Who named it after him? And when was the name first applied? Did he name it after himself? A short etymology section would be a worthwhile addition to this article if anyone is so inclined. Thank you. 66.91.36.8 (talk) 04:24, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
