Herman Joseph Justin[edit]

I added the name: Herman Joseph Justin,(aka: H.J. Justin; H. 'Joe' Justin), the founder of the Justin Boot Company; 1879, in Burlington, TX (now, Spanish Fort, TX);, was born in Lafayette, IN. His father, was a cigar maker in Lafayette. 'Joe' Justin did not want to follow in his father's business, so at age 18 he left Lafayette, IN and went first to Gainville, TX to work in the boot repair business. The story continues.... This story is corroborated on the Justin Boot Company web site Justin Boot Company net500cg (talk) 06:51, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Untitled[edit]

For the most part, I have no problems with the article. Some of the phrases in the article irk me though -- "the innovative genius" of Purdue University, for example? Not NPOV, or very accurate honestly. I'll go back and fix them myself, probably today. EagleFalconn 14:48, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

  • I rewrote the economy section, got rid of the superlatives. I think I've managed to stike a good balance here. I hope you think so. acaides 02:03, 2 November 2005 (UTC)

Lafayette Life[edit]

The Lafayette Life Company has recently merged with the Western & Southern Financial Group, and may need to be removed. Indiana 02:17, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Karen Black[edit]

The link for Karen Black refers to a Wikipedia Page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Black). On this page it lists Karen Black as being BORN IN Park Ridge, IL. No mention of Lafayette, IN comes up for any query on Karen Black, the actress. Verification should be made for the POB for Karen Black (Karen Blanche Ziegler) and if it is not Lafayette, IN, the name should be removed. net500cg (talk) 06:41, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Please check the notability of Karen Black being a resident of lafayette

According to this: [1] she went to Jefferson High school in Lafayette. And I think the school recognizes her as an accomplished alumnus in some of it's promotional materials. Not sure how long she lived here though. Nowimnthing 18:37, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

we have a teacher named karen black, she went to(and maybe taught) at jeff, prolly the only reason she notable

public schools[edit]

This section was getting a little long and possibly a little too gushing about the schools. Seeing as there is now a page for the corporation, I think that info will work better over there in the history section. We don't really need a list of every school in the city limits here and since there is already apage for the corporation that does a better job of listing the schools, there is no reason to duplicate it here. Winter/Spring 2007 vandalism to demographic data[edit]

I've noticed that User:74.38.50.249 has changed the US Census demographic data (such as the city's racial makeup and median income) several times since late February (see here, here, here, and here), apparently without anybody else noticing -- nobody seems to have undone the damage, in any case. I reverted the "demographics" section to the 2/24/07 version, which I checked against the original automated upload from back when this article was started in 2002. The article might benefit from having some responsible editors place it on their watchlist, so that they can revert such vandalism when it occurs. --Malepheasant 23:54, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

pronunciation[edit]

I attempted to correct the pronunciation, but may have gotten it wrong. Please check. kwami (talk) 09:35, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

YEAH I THINK ITS ALL MESSED UP,HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE A SQUARE? ˌlɑːfeɪˈɛt ,ANYWAY WE MAY NOT PRONOUNCE IT CORRECTLY TO BEGIN WITH,IT IS INDIANER YA KNOW,SO HERE IS HOW IT SHOULD BE 'LAH-FEE-ETTE' —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.46.49.98 (talk) 21:36, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

== ALSO,WHAT UP WITH THE FLAG? IVE NEVER SEENT IT,AND WE AINT NICKNAMED 'STAR CITY',IVE BEEN HERE FUR 25 YEARS AND I AINT NEVER HEARD OF NO STAR CITY,REALLY,ITS JUST LAH-FEE-ETTE AND 'THE WEST SIDE'.THATS IT.[edit]

star city[edit]

Yes, the nickname is "star city" which occasionally appears in the names of businesses (such as a now defunct bank.) It isn't heard much today.

Municipal flags are rarely seen except at city-county buildings. Chicago, Washington DC are exceptions.

Kyle0462 (talk) 00:27, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

  • well, if its not heard,or used, and the only example you can come up with is a defunct bank, should it really be considored a nickname?
    • id phrase it as a previously used nickname or something along that line, as we sit its mainly referred to as lafayette, west lafayette, or the 'west side' to the locals, and increasingly north mexico
      • well, we now have a local beer brewery called star city brewery...***

47909[edit]

47909 is also a valid lafayette zip code, but I don't know how do put it in? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.142.60.64 (talk) 06:38, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

I may be wrong but I believe all 47909 addresses are outside of the official city limits. The address may be Lafayette 47909, but that does not make it in the city. But now that I look closer it appears 47909 is everything South of Teal and some of that is in the city. So the great majority of 47909 is outside of the city, but some of it is in, I guess we can add it. Nowimnthing (talk) 14:25, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

history[edit]

In the last paragraph on the history section there is a sentence that says, Old Lafaytette in two volumes is highly recommended. Is this book highly recommended by the writer of this page? If so, revisement of this sentence is needed to make this sentence/statement true by facts, not personal opinion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Greenshp (talkcontribs) 16:57, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Sister Cities[edit]

I'm fairly sure that Ota, Gunma, Japan is a sister city to Lafayette, but there is no sister cities section in this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.29.245.124 (talk) 02:30, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
