Adrian Zmed[edit]

Adrian Zmed is the only notable alum? Surely someone more notable than a B-List actor has passed through the doors. Aren't there any alumni who at least own a gas station? 

  Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan) went to Lane but dropped out.

Then he won all those gold medals for swimming. Does that count??

According to the school's website, Lane produces more future Ph.D. holders than any other high school in the country Is that true?

The Films[edit]

I didn't edit it, but I was there when High Fidelity was filmed. They didn't just use the east lawn, they filmed inside too. They took over one of the chem classes across from mine. I am currently reviewing this article. I am confused about a recent edit made by an IP contributor. When were/was the name changed? The 1930s or early 2000s? My GA Review for this article[edit]

The requirements for a Good Article are as follows:

1. It is well written. In this respect:

  • I think the intro is well written and helps to point out the main points of the school as well as helps to establish some of its impressive stats early on.
  • The second paragraph in the “contribution to WWII” subsection doesn’t seem to belong there as 1958 is well after the conclusion of WWII. Perhaps a separate subsection?
  • Clean up the Alumni Associate section. Also, perhaps break off the Notable alumni list into a separate section.
  • Double check for grammar and spelling errors. I found a couple very minor errors and corrected them.

2. It is factually accurate and verifiable. In this respect, it:

  • There are some notable alumni that appear to lack citations supporting the fact that they went to the school. Please add citations or remove their names from the list.
  • For the most part, most of the statements are correct and properly cited. I did, however, add “citation needed” tags to several locations within the article. Please cite the source of this information.
  • I am confused about when the name change actually occurred due to a change that an IP editor recently made to the article. Editor 71.201.221.234 made the edit on April 9, 2008. Please verify that this change was correct and NOT vandalism.

3. It is broad in its coverage. In this respect, it:

  • The article does an excellent job of covering a great deal of information regarding the school.

4. Does the article maintain Neutrality?

  • The beginning of the subsection “admittance of female students” needs to change. Cut out the intro where you say “one of the most drastic changes.” Seems a little non-neutral to me. Just the facts. The reader doesn’t need to be told this was a drastic change.

5. It is stable. In this respect, it:

  • The article is pretty stable with no major edit wars that I’ve been able to see recently.

6. It is illustrated, where possible and appropriate, by images.[4] In this respect:

  • There are two photos already present and their copyright status appears to be fine.
  • As the school seems to have some pretty unique architectural features, I would love to see some more photographs of the campus. Specifically, Lane Tech Auditorium, Lane Stadium, and the Memorial Garden. If these photos are difficult to get within a short period of time, then fine. I’ll pass it w/o them. But for long term additions, these photos are important.

In conclusion, with the article as it now stands, I am putting the article on hold until the above issues are addressed. So long as they are addressed and no further issues are found, I will be happy to pass this article to GA status. will381796 (talk) 19:10, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have taken your suggestions and completed several of the suggestions. Since I need proper permission to obtain photos of the school, I will not be able to obtain pictures for some time, but I will be happy to put up pictures of the school and events related to the school up asap.   • The changes look good so far. I still see several people listed as notable alumni that lack references:
  1. Bill Fischer: College Football Hall of Famer
  2. Bato Govedarica: 1946 All-State basketball player, played at DePaul and in the NBA
  3. John Podesta: President Clinton's chief of staff.
  • Good job on the citations. One last thing that I just noticed is that I think there is undue space given to describing the ethnic clubs for the school. THe reference you cite shows a great number of other non-ethnic clubs. I would steer away from any type of list of clubs and would rather stick with the intro sentence that you already have and then also describe a few other notable clubs or organizations that the school has. For example, is there a National Honor Society chapter at this school? If so, what's the name of the chapter? Have any organizations or clubs participated in any events or won any national championships? Cut out the list you have and see if you can add any of this other information. Also, some IP editor last night went through and removed all of the citations you inserted for the alumni, so you will need to redo that. Also, I removed from your list Juba Kalamka. This alumni was referenced with a myspace profile. A couple of other small issues remain, but I will refrain from delisting at this point. However, please address them as I am uncertain whether this article would pass a GA reassessment:
  • Is it really necessary to link Ph.D. in the lead section?
This is a point that confuses me. Are there certain times when wikilinks are inappropriate? I mean, of course you don't want every word in an article wikilinked, but is there some reason why the Ph.D. wikilink stands out at you and not the Wikilink on carpentry or cabinet making in the history section? will381796 (talk) 14:52, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Several short sections in the 'history' section -- indication of possible completeness issues (criterion #3). In cases where there is very little text in a subsection, it's generally a good idea to try and integrate it into the main section, using subsections only for very broad topics that have a decent amount of information in them.

  • Article needs a good copyedit; there's some manual of style issues -- some missing punctuation marks at the ends of sentences, some reference citations are out of place (citations should be placed immediately after punctuation, not before the punctuation, and with no space in between).

  • The events subsection under 'school traditions' is really just a short list, and could be expanded to better cover the topic. Most of these events are not cited with sources.
  • There's some improperly linked dates in some of the reference citations used -- please see the manual of style regarding date formatting here. Also, citations should preferably also include a publisher, and a date of publication (not just a date of URL retrieval). If an author is provided, put that in the citation as well.
  • Perhaps 'school traditions' should be combined with 'athletics', since some of these traditions might be related to athletic programs/games?

There's a brief mention in the introduction. Delisting from GA status[edit]

I'm not sure how good this article was when it reached GA status, but this article clearly needs to be repaired. Specifically, there are claims made that are in some cases potentially unencyclopedic, and in others, uncited. Alumni have been added without reference. I have gone through and have updated the infobox, and added significant improvements to referencing the alumni (in addition to expanding that some. I also eliminated the alumni association advertising as that really does not belong here. Pictures and additional information from a 1940 South Bend book[edit]

I have a Spanish version of a 1940 South Bend lathe manual ("Manual del Tornero") that I inherited from my father. It has some pictures of the school after it moved to its present location. The book states that the school was "one of the largest and best equipped in the US", and that the "building cost 6 million dollars, with the new machine shop equipment costing half a million". It states that "there are 4 machine shops in the school, with 23 South Bend engine lathes each". Also "the building covers 65,030 square meters and the land where it's located covers 121,400 square meters" (about 25 acres, 8 acres less than today?). It continues: "The auditorium has a capacity of 2,200 persons, each classroom has 60 seats and each machine shop has 54 seats" (presumably for machine shop lectures). "The building has a capacity of 272 teachers and 8,865 students". It is interesting to note that the tall smoke stack we see today is not present on the book's school's picture (erected at a later time?). The clock tower is visible, though. The article also depicts photographs of "Machine Shop number 230" and "Machine Shop number 129" (two of the four machine shops mentioned).Bobcasas1 (talk) 03:03, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Page is very outdated[edit]

I wanted to update the Student Life section of this page, as well as summarizing the more redundant points in the opening paragraph. For example, the opening paragraph should talk about local schools near Chicago, selective enrollment process, first graduating class, school construction, and quick facts. Some things in the summary can be moved to other parts of the Wiki and expanded on (like International Days).
