This is a totally stupid list. O.P. JIndal is there, but Sunil Bharti Mittal,Lakshmi Mittal,Ruia brothers,Rahul Bajaj,Anil Agarwal are not here? And why prominent non business personalities not there? Like Kejriwal and Bhushan father son duo? Or Bobby Jindal? There are many number of very important people not here. This is strange. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.242.116.93 (talk) 17:30, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adding names to this list[edit]

Before adding names to this list please review User:Sitush/Common#Castelists. The entries must be sourced, the sources must show self-identification if the person is living, and last name is not verification. Furthermore, if the person does not have an article on Wikipedia then please write that article first. Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 08:13, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It is not enough for a person to self-identify himself as belonging to a birth-based group. If is person is born of Agrawal parents, and is acknowledged by other Agrawals as being their own, he is an Agrawal. There are people who claim to be Agrawal, but are not. A person in USA may self-identify himself as a Democrat or a Republican, but not as belonging to Piqua Shawnee Tribe, unless he was born in that tribe, or is acknowledged by members of the tribe as being one of them. It is considered inappropriate for a person to mention his "caste" unless there is specific reason. Malaiya (talk) 02:44, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

List is too short (2 names), and half the names are wrong![edit]

Famous individuals who were not Agrawal: Bhamashah (was Oswal), Mahatma Gandhi (Modh), GD Birla (Maheshwari), Maithili Sharan Gupt (Gahoi), not Agrawal, but from very similar Bania communities.

Who were/are indeed Agrawal:

Sanjay Gupta, the American surgeon/reporter is Agrawal (he had a TV report on his roots https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9ivklq8q7U CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta uncovers his roots). Bobby Jindal was born of Agrawal parents.

Some Agrawal families have been prominent for several generations, in most cases they became prominent in 1930s. These include Dalmia, Singhania, Sahu Jain, Bajaj of Vardha, Goenka, Garodia. Some of the others, like the Birla (Maheshwari), Sarabhai (Shrimal Jain), Walchand Hirachand (Humad) are not Agrawal, but share similar backgrounds and values.

People with last name Gupta or Garg may or may not be an Agrawal (even though about 25% of the Agrawals are Garg, some Brahmins may also use the last name Garg since it is the name of a Rishi, ("Garg" is completely tatsama). Anyone with last name Agrawal/Aggarwal/Agarwala has to be an Agrawal (or at least someone claiming to be an Agrawal). Last names Goel/Goyal/Goyaliya, Bansal, Mittal, Jindal imply the person is an Agrawal. The last name Gupta is also used by some other merchant communities, however consider the fact that the Agrawals are a very large community, most Guptas are likely Agrawal.
