Proposed Oriental Orthodoxy project[edit]

There is now a new proposed project at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Oriental Orthodoxy for a group which would focus on articles relating to the Oriental Orthodox Church. Harutyun I and Nerses II pictures of the same man?[edit]

I noticed that the two patriarch pictures on the page, those of Harutyun I and Nerses II look to be the same man. Are they twin brothers, or are the pictures labelled wrong? --Free smyrnan 15:53, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

early period is unclear[edit]

The article currently makes it sound like this chronology is uncontroversial fact, but my understanding is that there is disagreement over historians over when precisely the office of Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople was established, who filled it at various times, and what powers it did or didn't have. Basically there are few reliable sources on the period so historians aren't quite sure what happened, and when.

For example, Franz Babinger, in Mehmed the Conqueror and His Time, describes the claimed 1461 establishment as follows: "If it is true, as certain Armenian historians claim, that the sultan transferred Joachim (Hovakim), the Armenian archbishop of Bursa, to Istanbul in 1461 and established him there with the title of patriarch...". That doesn't make it sound like he's at all confident in that chronology or narration of events, and he goes on to say that we have little to no reliable information about Hovakim or his flock. Constantinople/Istanbul[edit]

transliteration[edit]

all of the transliterations here are done according to the soviet orthography; as these are churchmen, the majority of whom lived and served before the orthographic reforms of the 1920s, the classical orthography should be used. moreover, the term "istanbultsi" is incorrect for a variety of reasons.
