More sources needed[edit]

Every entry in the list should ideally have a source listed with the list. This list currently is heavily defficinet in this matter.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:32, 11 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notating Senior Status[edit]

Hi Fellow Editors, I'm starting a discussion inspired by good-faith edits made by User:Snickers2686 and myself. This is the first Talk Page discussion I'm starting, so I'm hoping I'm doing this correctly.

Here's my question: Should judges who achieve Senior Status be distinctly categorized as Senior, as they are on United States District Court pages (e.g. United States District Court for the District of Hawaii)? Or should they be marked strictly as either Active or Retired?

Osevilla (talk) 17:56, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Senior status is a form of semi-retirement, See: senior status, but in regards to federal judges, they still have an active case load, participate in oral arguments, etc. so by no means are they "retired". Even as senior status judges, they're still considered "active" unless they die, resign or retire. It can't get much more clear cut than that. Besides, it'd be asinine to have to go back through and mark every active judge now as senior Snickers2686 (talk) 18:10, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Would it be helpful for readers to know which federal judges have achieved Senior Status? Federal judges may indeed participate with an active case load, but they do so on a volunteer basis and overall handle only about 15 percent of the federal courts' workload. When judges take senior status, they create a judicial vacancy for a full-time Active member of the court. Individual wikipages for judges are updated when they take senior status, and the various U.S. District Court pages also make a clear distinction between judges serving an Active and Senior term of service. Per the October 2023 note indicating the need to "update judicial terms in light of resignations, retirements, etc.", this page already requires updating for judges who have transitioned from Active service to full retirement/resignation/death; over the course of those updates, my view is that it would be easy enough for editors to denote Senior Status to remain consistent with the individual judge and U.S. district court pages, based on what is already indicated on those pages. The convention just needs to be established. It would be helpful to hear thoughts from more editors or administrators. Osevilla (talk) 00:08, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
