Why?[edit]

Why is this page here? What purpose does it serve in the English language WP? A list of French, or Persian loanwords I could understand, or a list of English words occurring in Persian, or French. But not this. Surely anyone who is that familiar with either language would be using the French, or Persian WP. There are about 4000 languages in the world; are we going to have a list for every combination that throws up?
I suggest this page be moved to the French, and to the Persian, WP. Opinions? Moonraker12 (talk) 23:39, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. It appears this article has a counterpart on the Persian Wikipedia, but not the French. If others feel that it is of utmost importance to translate this page to French and place it there, by all means go ahead. Not only it should be moved, but also the title is wrong. They are the French loanwords in Persian. It's a list of Persian words of French origin. Here are a few things to note. First, these are French loanwords into Persian. Second, this topic is of general interest to Persian studies. Most European loanwords into Persian are French so a good chunk of the vocabulary of the modern world in Persian comes from French, which makes this a more appropriate topic than say, German loanwords into Persian or Gaelic loanwords into Haitian Creole. Besides the historical and cultural significance, native English speakers who learn Persian frequently do so as a third or fourth language. French is much more common for English speakers to speak as a second-language, hence there would logically be an overlap of English speakers learning Persian who are also familiar with French, but not necessarily fluent enough to use the French-language wikipedia. 71.63.151.86 (talk) 00:47, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I fully agree with the message above (from just 2 days ago!). This list is the most relevant loanword list of Persian besides Arabic and other indic influences, and is useful to English readers.
