Order of List?[edit]

Please order this this list chronologically. Or at least make it like a spreadsheet that allows sorting the data by dates of initial service.

Gender/Race/Religion/Political Affiliation[edit]

Although I wouldn't normally suggest we label and categorize professionals by these metrics, I think it would be valuable to be able to compare the statistics on these persons have gained access to the highest bench in the state. The reasoning for this is that it may allow persons to view the court's opinions in the light of the justices who sat on the bench at the time of decision. Unsourced; confusion with Iowa territory Supreme Court?[edit]

I see a couple problems with this list. ~~The most basic one is there are no sources at all for any of these justices' services.~~

More subtly, Iowa became a state on December 28, 1848, 9 Stat. 117. Three of these judges are listed as having joined the court well before that. For example, Charles Mason is listed as joining in 1838. Most likely, he was a justice of the Iowa Territory Supreme Court, a completely different court (a federal court, set up by 5 Stat. 235, § 9; whose judges were appointed by the US President, § 11). Kudos to BD2412, who has added what looks to be a pretty comprehensive reference. The territorial court issue still remains, though. It seems even the Iowa Judicial Branch has adopted the Territorial court as being just an early release of the Iowa Supreme Court, although it was clearly a different court, organized, authorized and appointed under a different regime and sovereign. According to the State Historical Society of Iowa, the Supreme Court of the Territory of Iowa was established in 1838, with three judges - Mason, Williams, and Wilson. All three then became the first three justices of the Iowa Supreme Court upon statehood. Technically, it is correct to say that all three started serving on the Iowa Supreme Court on whatever date it opened for business, which was ~~almost certainly~~ the same date as statehood itself became official, on December 28, 1846. bd2412 T 02:32, 3 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
