Expansion of list[edit]

I have now extended the List of Southampton F.C. players to include players from 1885 to 1939 as well as post-war players. As far as notability goes, I have stuck with the 100 games/30 goals concept. But what about players who played in the 2 FA Cup finals in 1900 & 1902, or were Southern League champions 6 times from 1897 to 1904. Then there's the 1921-22 season when they were 3rd Division South champions as well as other promotions. Where do we stop?

I have therefore removed players from the original list who are only there because of their involvement in the 1966 or 1978 promotion seasons e.g. Campbell Forsyth and Mike Pickering, but left the 1976 FA Cup winning squad (obviously). What about the 2003 FA Cup final squad (Michael Svensson and Chris Baird) - are they sufficiently notable? If so, how are they better (ignoring recentism) than those from 1900 and 1902?

I think the article should perhaps also have a section for Saints players who played for their countries whilst on Saints' books e.g. C. B. Fry. Let me know what you think. Daemonic Kangaroo 05:17, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think the FA Cup final squads are notable enough to be included. I'd leave out players in promotion sides, unless they won silverware in the process or meet the other criteria. Just so I get this straight, what exactly are the full citerion? As far as I can tell, it's:
  • 100 games (does this include sub appearances?)
  • 30 goals
  • Won silverware
  • Played in a domestic final
  • Played in World Cup/European Championships
  • What about players who played for Saints in UEFA/Fairs Cup and the Cup Winner's Cup?

Alf Ramsey[edit]

Alf Ramsey appeared for Southampton 90 times between 1943-1949 in addition to above players. 2A00:23C6:D083:7301:C465:17D:40DF:80D9 (talk) 16:20, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
